Tony Evers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/wisconsin\/article_8977234c-f1ad-11ee-9c1a-b76dba78f2f7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">filed a brief<\/a>\u00a0in early April looking overturn a ruling from 2022 that said ballot drop boxes are not allowed under state law.<\/p>\n<p>Kaul (pictured above) wrote that, by spring 2021, 570 drop boxes were placed across 66 of Wisconsin\u2019s 72 counties and the share of Wisconsin voters casting an absentee ballot increased from 6% to 30% from 2002 to 2022.<\/p>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_top\" class=\"tncms-region hidden-print\">\n<div id=\"tncms-block-1654543\" class=\"tncms-block block\">Kaul argued Wisconsin law does not prohibit drop boxes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cVoting should be safe, secure and accessible \u2014 and drop boxes are,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doj.state.wi.us\/sites\/default\/files\/news-media\/4.25.24_Respondents_Brief_FINAL.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Kaul said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cUnfortunately, the use of drop boxes has been swept into the broader and baseless attacks on our elections and our democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our filing, we\u2019re arguing that Wisconsin law does not prohibit the use of drop boxes, and that clerks should be able to determine whether to offer this convenient method of voting in their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon Styf is an award-winning editor and reporter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/wisconsin\/article_095a3736-0958-11ef-9410-2b4db1af09d4.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">The Center Square<\/a> who has worked in Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, Florida and Michigan in local newsrooms over the past 20 years, working for Shaw Media, Hearst and several other companies.<br \/>\nBackground Photo \u201cBallot Drop Box\u201d by<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Ballot_Drop_Box_%2831409335423%29.jpg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"> Paul Sableman<\/a>.
