2024 | Week of May 20 | Radio Transcript #1567<\/h3>\n

A number of years ago, I was speaking to a group in Superior, Wisconsin.\u00a0 I finished my presentation, and the emcee asked if there were any questions. A lady raised her hand and asked, \u201cWhat do you say to us who are grandparents about what we can do to make sure our grandchildren know the truth about America and have the right values instilled in them?\u201d\u00a0 My response began with, \u201cFirst, don\u2019t give up.\u00a0 Keep trying.\u00a0 Even when it seems it\u2019s not working, keep trying.\u201d<\/p>\n

After everything was concluded, a gentleman came up to me and said, \u201cThank you for telling us not to quit. I have to tell you a story that proves your point.\u201d\u00a0 As I listened, I noticed this gentleman had a pin on his shirt\u2014a small decorative gold pin with a dark blue background and a gold star in the center of that background.\u00a0 I had seen the pin earlier but wasn\u2019t sure what it represented. I was about to find out.<\/p>\n

Bruce Vrooman proceeded to tell me about his son Jeremy.\u00a0 Jeremy had had a tough time growing up.\u00a0 His mom and dad divorced, which his father admitted was hard for Jeremy.\u00a0 Then his dad, who had custody of the children, remarried.\u00a0 Another adjustment for Jeremy.\u00a0 His step-mom Sue took Jeremy in as one of her own, but it was still tough.\u00a0 As his dad told me the story, he said all along the way, we just kept working with him and loving him.\u00a0 We never gave up. It was always too soon to quit.\u00a0 He was our son. We loved him; we wanted the best for him. We knew we needed to help him every way we could.<\/p>\n

Things got to the point where some outside help was needed, all part of the \u201ctough love\u201d of his dad and step-mom.\u00a0 Shortly after graduating from high school Jeremy enlisted in the Army, a branch of the military he had long admired.<\/p>\n

Jeremy became a Cavalry Scout and eventually a Staff Sergeant.\u00a0 Along the way, he married and by 2007 had two children.\u00a0 In June of 2008, he was deployed with his unit to Iraq. On July 15, 2008, Jeremy was leading a mission to clear twelve buildings. He made the decision that he should be the first to enter the building his team of 3 had been assigned. The building was booby-trapped and exploded, killing 28-year-old Staff Sergeant Jeremy Vrooman.<\/p>\n

With a choked voice, Jeremy\u2019s dad said, \u201cWe never gave up.\u00a0 We kept loving him and encouraging him.\u00a0 In the Army, Jeremy showed us who he really was.\u201d\u00a0 Jeremy Vrooman was credited with saving the lives of at least 59 other soldiers and has been posthumously honored multiple times, as well as having a military funeral with the highest honors.\u00a0 Numerous high-ranking military personnel who had known Jeremy spoke at various memorial services giving praise for the man and the soldier Jeremy had been.<\/p>\n

Bruce Vrooman said as we finished our conversation, \u201cPlease keep telling people to not give up on their children. The end of the story isn\u2019t written.\u201d\u00a0 With tears in my eyes, I thanked Bruce for not giving up and for telling his son\u2019s story.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a story of multiple heroes\u2026certainly Jeremy is a hero, but so are his dad and step-mom who refused to give up on their son. Suddenly, I realized the pin this father wore proudly on his shirt was a Next of Kin Killed in Action pin. It\u2019s a hero\u2019s pin.<\/p>\n

Next Monday is Memorial Day.\u00a0 We need to take time to remember and honor those who have given the supreme sacrifice for our freedom because, unfortunately, not every military deployment has a happy ending. Jeremy Vrooman\u2019s didn\u2019t.\u00a0 But because a dad and step-mom refused to give up on a beloved son, Jeremy\u2019s story is truly that of a hero\u2014a young man who overcame some obstacles and lived his life for others\u2014for the love of his life, his wife and his family, and for the soldiers with whom he served.<\/p>\n

This Memorial Day as we give honor to whom honor is due, let\u2019s also give honor to the moms and dads, the grandmothers and grandfathers and extended families who have lost loved ones in the military.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing there are many, many stories like the Vrooman\u2019s out there. Stories that remind all of us that it is always too soon to quit, too soon to give up on our children and grandchildren. Surely there are more heroes in the making.<\/p>\n
