Milwaukee Public Schools are missing another deadline for the financial report that was due to the state last year.<\/p>\n

MPS and the state\u2019s Department of Public Instruction said they hope to have the report finalized by Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a hard and fast deadline, but we\u2019re cautiously optimistic that it is possible,\u201d State Superintendent Jill Underly told reporters at a press conference.<\/p>\n

The report, which was supposed to detail Milwaukee\u2019s spending for the 2023 school year, was due by September of last year.<\/p>\n

MPS Interim Superintendent Eduardo Galvan said the district has been working since the spring to re-do the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile our progress signals a resolution to MPS reporting issues, our work is not done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Galvan blamed the delay on out-dated computers, a lack of training and not enough people in MPPS\u2019 comptroller\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

But the 2023 report is not the only state-required report from Milwaukee Public Schools that will likely be late.<\/p>\n

DPI said MPS likely won\u2019t have its 2024 financial reports until later this winter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to beat those dates hopefully by many weeks in 2025,\u201d Underly said.<\/p>\n

Sen. John Jagler, R-Watertown, said that the approach of \u201cwe hope,\u201d is part of the problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is in charge? Both MPS and DPI roll past statutory deadlines without concern. Even the governor\u2019s audit is past due,\u201d Jagler (pictured above) said on social media. \u201cThis is a multi-million-dollar fiasco and the education establishment clearly feels they are untouchable.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said a culture of backroom deals has crippled public education in Milwaukee, and in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

\u201cA pattern is developing. Wisconsin kids aren\u2019t doing well on test scores? Lower the standards,\u201d Jagler said. \u201cMPS is late on financial reports? Give them a new deadline. They don\u2019t meet that deadline? Pretend deadlines don\u2019t exist. The law requires MPS to have school resource officers? Ignore.\u201d<\/p>\n

MPS has said it is working on returning school resource officers to the city\u2019s school buildings. Those officers were supposed to be back in MPS schools Jan. 1.<\/p>\n
