The legislation also requires that a statement describing the historical significance of the Ten Commandments be included and that a display can also include other notable documents, such as the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980 the US Supreme Court ruled displaying the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms violated the First Amendment. What Louisiana and now South Dakota are doing\u2014and rightly so\u2014is showing that the Ten Commandments are in our history\u2019s DNA.
