I think that\u2019s horribly irresponsible,\u201d Kelly said about Protasiewicz\u2019s threat to consider suing over the allegations, which her campaign later walked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the work that you (Wisconsin Right Now\u2019s reporters) have done shows that there are credible allegations of this kind of, of horrible behavior, and, if those allegations turn out to be true, that\u2019s really significant,\u201d Kelly said in his fullest comments on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s also \u201ca very big if\u201d because \u201cat the current moment they\u2019re allegations,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cI think these things should be investigated, and I think that there is a great deal of responsibility to investigate those claims and bring those to a resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly called the media\u2019s lack of coverage of the allegations \u201cjust flat-out irresponsible.\u201d He said he believes the mainstream media is trying to skew coverage to favor Protasiewicz and help her win.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Right Now has reported that two men \u2013 former restaurant\/bar owner Jon Ehr and Protasiewicz\u2019s former stepson Michael Madden \u2013 say they personally saw Protasiewicz physically abuse her then-husband Judge Patrick Madden and allegedly heard her use the \u201cN word.\u201d Protasiewicz denied the allegations to other news outlets, but she has not responded to WRN\u2019s request for comment. Four other people have told WRN they heard about the elder abuse allegations years ago, either from Michael Madden or Patrick Madden.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said there is a media double standard in the race to treat Protasiewicz more leniently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important story that you\u2019re working on,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the shoe was on the other foot, and these kinds of allegations were being made about me, there wouldn\u2019t even be a speed bump for the mainstream media. They would jump in with both feet, and there would be no looking back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the mainstream media\u2019s \u201cbehavior on this story is, well, let\u2019s just say it\u2019s curious. I remember that during the primary, the mainstream media was all over Everett Mitchell and the allegations made against him. And the fact that they were allegations didn\u2019t stop them in a heartbeat. So I wonder why they went after him, but they\u2019re taking a very hands-off approach\u201d to Protasiewicz, Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>As a justice, Kelly said he was \u201cpunctiliously careful about the things I said and made sure I had unimpeachable evidence of what we were saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he wasn\u2019t sure whether the difference in coverage given to Mitchell was based on race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would require crawling into their minds. The way that we are treated, if there is anything that appears to be that, the left will immediately jump to the conclusion that it is race-based. Is it? I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly\u2019s comments came in a podcast on Thursday night with Wisconsin Right Now, the award-winning news outlet that broke the Protasiewicz story.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said there is a \u201cmoral responsibility of the press to cover news that people need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2023\/justice-kelly-campaign-comments-on-abuse-allegations-against-judge-protasiewicz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">previously released a statement<\/a> on the abuse allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe late Judge Madden was a highly regarded and well-respected Wisconsin jurist. These abuse allegations against Janet Protasiewicz are troubling to say the least. Wisconsinites deserve a swift and full explanation,\u201d Justice Kelly said in that statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the statement we released, I expected that to be covered. That\u2019s why we released it,\u201d he said in the podcast. \u201cIt was just roundly ignored by the press. The statement didn\u2019t make me look bad and the only thing the press is interested in running about me at least is anything that would possibly make me look bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said the media \u201care definitely putting their thumb on what people are hearing about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think the people of Wisconsin are owed an explanation at the very least about these allegations. They need to know,\u201d Kelly added.<\/p>\n<p>He said the people of Wisconsin \u201cneed to learn\u201d whether the allegations are false or true. He said he wants to prevail in an honest fact-filled campaign, and added that it would be a travesty if the allegations turned out to not be true and influenced the election. So, an investigation should be done \u201cto see whether these are true.\u201d He said it\u2019s important \u201cone way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If it was proven to be true that Protasiewicz used racial slurs \u201cthat would just be one more disqualifying aspect to my opponent\u2019s candidacy,\u201d said Kelly. \u201cShe has demonstrated herself to be a serial liar.
