Two will advance after next Tuesday\u2019s primary.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a large state agency that interacts directly or indirectly with 421 school districts, 2,300 schools, more than 800,000 students, and thousands of teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Every four years, voters decide who will lead a department that\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/wasbo.com\/images\/wasbo\/documents\/6\/handouts\/2023\/WASBOVideoExplainer-May_2023-Slides.pdf\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">spends billions of dollars and employs hundreds of people.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It may not be the biggest turnout election, but it\u2019s important to Sally Maddick. \u201cThey are making decisions about the education of our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caralyn Court agrees. She sees the state superintendent playing a role in how Wisconsin schools shape the next generation of students. \u201cWe need to educate the next leaders in our country and our businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not an easy topic to tackle in one story, but TMJ4 turned to Quinton Klabon to help understand DPI\u2019s impact on K-12 education.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOne really important avenue where DPI intersects with school districts is helping to provide teachers. They are also partners with the universities who are producing great educators,\u201d said Klabon. \u201cI don\u2019t care what district you are in\u2014urban, rural, suburban\u2014everybody\u2019s looking for teachers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Klabon currently does education research at the Institute for Reforming Government, a center-right, nonprofit that advocates for all Wisconsin schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While DPI is set up to partner with schools, there can also be pushback from the public and educators on changes to measuring test scores or classroom curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile a lot of the school districts have independence in what exactly they teach in the classrooms, it\u2019s DPI that sets the standards,\u201d said Klabon. \u201cThey are helping provide the teachers, and they are working with schools on finance to make sure they are in compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The importance of the state superintendent race is not lost on voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the decisions that will affect what goes on in our schools,\u201d said Maddick, \u201cand the distribution of funds and everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three candidates running for the state\u2019s top educator job include\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinwatch.org\/2025\/02\/wisconsin-education-school-underly-wright-kinser-superintendent-public-instruction-election\/\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">current State Superintendent Jill Underly.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She is being challenged by Brittany Kinser and Jeff Wright. The primary is February 18.
