{"id":15785,"date":"2025-03-16T01:18:02","date_gmt":"2025-03-16T02:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=15785"},"modified":"2025-03-16T02:57:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T02:57:35","slug":"dei-on-campus-more-colleges-removing-dei-programs-requirements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=15785","title":{"rendered":"DEI on Campus: More Colleges Removing DEI Programs &amp; Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/dei-on-campus-more-colleges-removing-dei-programs-and-requirements\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/dei-on-campus-more-colleges-removing-dei-programs-and-requirements\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/MixCollage-15-Mar-2025-09-16-PM-8664.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"ROFR\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ROFR\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of Virginia has shuttered its diversity, equity, and inclusion office as it along with other schools across the nation respond to the Trump administration\u2019s termination of what he says are illegal DEI practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University&#8217;s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Partnerships is hereby dissolved,\u201d the University of Virginia Board of Visitors\u2019 resolution obtained by The Center Square reads.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution said that UVA\u2019s move is following the Department of Education\u2019s Dear Colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/media\/document\/dear-colleague-letter-sffa-v-harvard-109506.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a>. The letter stated that race-based decisions in education are illegal, and if schools don\u2019t comply they may face loss of federal funding.<\/p>\n<p>Schools across the nation have been responding both to the Dear Colleague letter and Trump\u2019s Jan. 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/ending-radical-and-wasteful-government-dei-programs-and-preferencing\/\" target=\"_blank\">executive order<\/a> entitled \u201cEnding Radical And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing,\u201d along with other orders.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s order calls for the \u201ctermination of all discriminatory programs, including illegal DEI and \u2018diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility\u2019 (DEIA) mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities in the Federal Government, under whatever name they appear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A University of Virginia spokesman told The Center Square that, \u201cin accordance with the [board\u2019s] resolution, the administration will review the functions of the [DEI] office, and all personnel and programs that are permissible under state and federal law will be transferred within the University, within 30 days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will provide additional information as those efforts proceed,\u201d the spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio State University also announced the closing of its Office of Diversity and Inclusion, The Center Square previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_ee7694ca-fb67-11ef-a3e9-33863004ee0b.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When reached again, assistant vice president for media and public relations Benjamin Johnson told The Center Square that OSU\u2019s \u201creview is ongoing\u201d and that there are no new updates.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Cincinnati told of its plan to evaluate its DEI programs and remove DEI-related material from its websites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uc.edu\/news\/articles\/2025\/02\/president-pinto-shares-message-regarding-future-of-dei-at-uc.html\" target=\"_blank\">in a message<\/a> from President Neville Pinto to the UC Community.<\/p>\n<p>UC did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>East Carolina University no longer requires DEI-related graduation requirements, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.witn.com\/2025\/02\/06\/ecu-suspending-all-dei-graduation-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> WITN. When asked multiple times for comment, ECU did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Michigan, the University of Washington, the University of California, and Cornell previously told The Center Square they were evaluating, reviewing, or monitoring the executive order.<\/p>\n<p>Of the four schools, only U-M and UW responded when asked for any updates on their responses.<\/p>\n<p>U-M referred The Center Square to the school\u2019s federal order response update page. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/publicaffairs.vpcomm.umich.edu\/key-issues\/updates-related-to-federal-orders-memos-and-agency-guidance\/\" target=\"_blank\">webpage<\/a>, U-M is still monitoring federal activity.<\/p>\n<p>UW spokesman Victor Balta told The Center Square the school received notification of an investigation into dozens of universities from the Department of Education\u2019s Office of Civil Rights, with UW being one of the schools.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation concerns schools that are still making race-based decisions or are in partnership with organizations that make them, according to an Education Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/office-civil-rights-initiates-title-vi-investigations-institutions-of-higher-education-0\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are reviewing [the department\u2019s notification] carefully,\u201d Balta said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will, of course, cooperate with any investigation and provide factual information and responses,\u201d Balta said. \u201cWe have no further comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Arizona is also assessing federal updates and previously removed the phrase \u201ccommitted to diversity and inclusion\u201d from its land acknowledgment as well as took down some DEI-related webpages, The Center Square <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_ee7694ca-fb67-11ef-a3e9-33863004ee0b.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Columbia removed DEI language from parts of its website and took down some DEI-related web pages, The Center Square reported.<\/p>\n<p>Columbia previously referred The Center Square to a \u201cUniversity statements page for latest updates and public statements on ongoing issues,\u201d when reached for comment.
