U.S. stocks plummeted by market close on Friday as President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs continue to rattle markets across the world.<\/p>\n

The Dow Jones Industrial Average\u00a0plunged<\/a>\u00a02,200 points, or 5.5%, marking the steepest decline since June 2020, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 5.6%, and the S&P 500 tumbled 5.8%, also the largest decline since June 2020. This marked the second day in a row where U.S. stocks\u00a0nosedived<\/a>\u00a0after Trump\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday sweeping new tariffs on imported goods as part of what he called \u201cLiberation Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tariffs aim to \u201cstrengthen the international economic position of the United States and protect American workers,\u201d\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to a White House fact sheet published Wednesday. The White House\u2019s fact sheet further claimed that the \u201ccurrent global trading order allows those using unfair trade practices to get ahead, while those playing by the rules get left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"China has already moved to retaliate against Trump\u2019s tariffs, with the country\u2019s Finance Ministry announcing<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that it plans to launch 34% tariffs on all imports coming from the U.S., which will take effect on April 10. In response to\u00a0China\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0tariff announcement, Trump claimed Friday in a\u00a0post<\/a>\u00a0on Truth Social that the country \u201cplayed it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCHINA PLAYED IT WRONG, THEY PANICKED \u2013 THE ONE THING THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO DO!\u201d Trump wrote in the social media post.<\/p>\n

While Trump has\u00a0claimed<\/a>\u00a0that stock markets will \u201cboom\u201d amid his economic policies, many Americans are beginning to sour on the state of the U.S. economy. A majority of voters, or 54%, disapprove of Trump\u2019s handling of the economy, with only 44% approve,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to an NBC News poll released March 16.<\/p>\n
