Dan Kelly\u2019s dad left the former Supreme Court justice with a piece of profound wisdom.<\/p>\n

In a podcast appearance Thursday on \u201cWisconsin Right Now Uncensored,\u201d Kelly opened up about his father, Ed Kelly, and the lesson his dad taught him that he treasures to this day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s actually one of the reasons I\u2019m so bothered by the lies that Janet\u2019s telling about me,\u201d Kelly said of Janet Protasiewicz, his liberal opponent in the state Supreme Court race.<\/p>\n

\"Dan\u201cWhen we grew up, we didn\u2019t have a whole heckuva lot in our family. I had three brothers and three sisters, and my mom and dad had to work really hard to make the dollars stretch from one week to the next,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was a teenager, one day my dad set me down. \u2018He said, Now Dan, when I\u2019m done with this life, I\u2019m not going to have a lot to leave you, but I\u2019ll make you this promise: I will leave you a good name.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe year after I graduated law school, his comments came to pass. He didn\u2019t have a lot to leave me. A couple cufflinks and a broken pocket watch. But he left me a good name. I\u2019ve treasured that my whole life. It\u2019s been my goal to hand down my good name to my children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Dan\u201cI get angry when there\u2019s someone like a Janet Protasiewicz out there lying about me and trying to trash my father\u2019s legacy. That makes me furious. But it\u2019s because my dad taught me the value of character in a person, and he told me that your name is everything. And I believe him. That was a good lesson to leave, and I\u2019ve lived my life according to that lesson ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"DanKelly said his dad was born in New Jersey and went on a Navy tour after high school.<\/p>\n

But he \u201calways wanted to be a man of the West. He moved to Wyoming and worked as a cowboy\u2026 out riding the range and rounding up cattle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"DanHe was a \u201ccowboy, and he loved that,\u201d working on ranches in Wyoming, Colorado, and California.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was his sensibility. It was this straight-forward down-to-earth kind of guy that you just love and respect, and I sure love my dad and respected him an awful lot,\u201d Kelly said.\"Dan<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
