\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court halted a lower court order on Tuesday that would have forced the Trump administration to reinstate thousands of fired federal workers.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u00a0asked<\/a>\u00a0the justices in March to block an order issued by Clinton-appointed U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup directing the reinstatement of over 16,000 probationary employees.<\/p>\n

Some of the nonprofit organizations behind the lawsuit made allegations that are \u201cpresently insufficient to support the organizations\u2019 standing,\u201d the Supreme Court\u2019s\u00a0order<\/a>\u00a0states. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson would have denied the request.<\/p>\n

\"\"Alsup ruled<\/a>\u00a0March 13 that six agencies \u2014 the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Energy, Interior and Treasury \u2014 must offer jobs back to probationary employees who had been terminated.<\/p>\n

Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0in the government\u2019s March 24 application that one judge should not be able to control \u201cthe Executive Branch\u2019s powers of personnel management on the flimsiest of grounds and the hastiest of timelines.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is no way to run a government,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThis Court should stop the ongoing assault on the constitutional structure before further damage is wrought.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0organizations<\/a>\u00a0argued in filings that they had grounds to sue because the mass firings impede their ability to \u201cperform core business activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt strains credulity that returning employees to work would cause irreparable harm to the Government when these employees had the same workspaces, credentials, benefits, and training just a few weeks ago,\u201d the groups wrote.<\/p>\n
