{"id":17614,"date":"2025-10-09T21:06:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T21:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=17614"},"modified":"2025-10-09T21:57:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T21:57:06","slug":"a-housing-victory-zoning-to-match-community-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=17614","title":{"rendered":"A housing victory: zoning to match community plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/a-housing-victory-zoning-to-match-community-plan\/\">https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/a-housing-victory-zoning-to-match-community-plan\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Assembly voted largely along party lines this week in support of a crucial housing bill, AB453, that will rein in NIMBYism \u2014 the \u201cnot in my back yard\u201d outcry that greets developers trying to increase housing supply in communities where elected officials want the same thing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1238\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/e74sq7k37a8.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wi-assembly-ab453-housing-plan-zoning-web.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56741\" style=\"width:361px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Just one of several housing bills considered this week, the legislation authored by Rep. David Armstrong (R-Rice Lake) essentially states that a local government must approve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/plans-zoning-and-annexation-form-front-lines-for-wisconsin-cities-looking-to-build-more-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rezoning requests<\/a> when they are in accord with the comprehensive plan that the community already has drawn up.<\/p>\n<p>It in no way reduces local control or forces local governments to accept development densities they haven\u2019t already approved during the planning process.<\/p>\n<p>The Badger Institute, which recently published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Badger-Institute-Housing-Research-060425.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60-page report<\/a> on housing issues in the state, supports the bill, and Institute President Mike Nichols <a href=\"https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/video\/hope-for-wisconsins-housing-supply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified on it<\/a> in committee.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
