The Use of Outdated Reading Curricula in Wisconsin Schools<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In this brief, we explore the correlation between the use of \u201cW<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hole Language\u201d lesson plans and lower reading proficiency, controlling for other factors.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition to the newly released report, WILL has updated its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/will-law.org\/school-scorecard\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School Scorecard Dashboard<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to include school district reading curricula. We believe that giving accurate, easy-to-access information about our school districts is critical to the future of education in Wisconsin.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Quote<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: WILL Research Director, Will Flanders, stated \u201cReading is a fundamental skill that every successful citizen must have. Right now, outdated \u2018Whole Language\u2019 teaching methods dominate many school curricula, and our findings show reading proficiency suffers because of it. We believe in empowering parents to know what their child is learning and support Wisconsin\u2019s efforts to adopt a \u2018science-based\u2019 curricula.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why It Matters: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wisconsin\u2019s reading proficiency is suffering, while o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ther states have seen their reading scores improve after adopting lesson plans modeled after \u201cThe Science of Reading.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Governor Evers vetoed several bills last session that would have required Wisconsin districts to move away from whole language curricula. As this issue continues to be a priority for policymakers and an important topic for families around the state, WILL\u2019s research provides\u2014for the first time\u2014a statewide look at what curricula districts are using for reading, and whether this choice has improved or lowered reading proficiency levels.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe Science of Reading\u201d is a \u201cback to the basics\u201d approach that is focused on learning phonics,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">increasing vocabulary, and sounding out words rather than the context-clue based \u201cguessing\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">techniques that characterize the popular \u201cWhole Language\u201d approach.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To learn what curricula your district is using, check out WILL\u2019s School Scorecard at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowmyschoolwi.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">www.knowmyschoolwi.com<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Key Findings &amp; Solutions:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">About 44% of schools around Wisconsin <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">under the high school level are still using \u201cWhole Language\u201d techniques such as Lucy Calkins and\/or Fountas and Pinnell.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Specifically, the use of Lucy Calkins is correlated with lower proficiency. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Controlling for a number of other factors that are known to affect reading scores, the use of Lucy Calkins is correlated with about a 2.1% decline in ELA proficiency.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Controlling for a number of other factors known to affect reading scores, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">the use of Lucy Calkins or the less used Fountas and Pinnell curriculum is correlated with 2.7% lower reading scores.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Policymakers should consider adopting best practices from \u201cThe Science of Reading.\u201d <strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">Areas across the political spectrum from Mississippi and Florida to New York City are moving away from \u201cWhole Language\u201d methods towards science-based curricula.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">WILL is grateful for our continued partnership with the Tommy Thompson Center on Public Leadership on this important topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dig Deeper:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/will-law.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Reading_Curricula-Final.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Trust the Science?
