{"id":2943,"date":"2023-05-18T22:55:46","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T22:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=2943"},"modified":"2023-05-18T22:57:38","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T22:57:38","slug":"top-senate-republican-unhappy-with-line-in-the-sand-over-shared-revenue-specifics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=2943","title":{"rendered":"Top Senate Republican Unhappy With \u201cLine in the Sand\u201d Over Shared Revenue Specifics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/top-senate-republican-unhappy-with-line-in-the-sand-over-shared-revenue-specifics\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/top-senate-republican-unhappy-with-line-in-the-sand-over-shared-revenue-specifics\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Collage-Maker-18-May-2023-05-54-PM-6927.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The prospects for Wisconsin\u2019s shared revenue plan got a bit dimmer Thursday after the top Republican in the State Senate said his half of the legislature wants a slightly different plan of their own.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu told reporters Thursday morning that the Senate will hold some public hearings, then vote on a version of the shared revenue proposal that Senators agree upon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that [Assembly Speaker Robin Vos] is drawing a line in the sand now with his version of the bill and stopping negotiations on the bill that not everybody\u2019s in agreement on,\u201d LeMahieu said.<\/p>\n<p>Vos declared on Wednesday that the Assembly is \u201cdone negotiating,\u201d and would not be \u201caccepting changes\u201d to the shared revenue legislation.<\/p>\n<p>That means the plan to share about $500 million with local governments across the state may not pass this spring.<\/p>\n<p>One of the issues is whether Milwaukee and Milwaukee County voters should have a say in whether their sales taxes are raised.<\/p>\n<p>Vos says yes, while LeMahieu is worried a tax hike vote could fail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt likely won\u2019t include a referendum vote, because I think that would not fix the problems in my view, because I think a referendum vote would fail,\u201d LeMahieu said. \u201cSo I think the way to do it is through a vote by the common council and the county board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vos said the Assembly considered a city council and county board vote, but also said Milwaukee\u2019s mayor rejected the idea because Republicans wanted that vote to be unanimous.<\/p>\n<p>LeMahieu on Thursday sent a not-so-gentle reminder to Vos that the Assembly doesn\u2019t own the legislative process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, there are two houses in the state Legislature,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to do our due diligence, make sure we have a bill that at least all the stakeholders can get behind, and if the Assembly at some point refuses to take up that bill, a bill that was going to make generational changes to townships, counties, municipalities all around the state, he\u2019s going to have to answer to his caucus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gov.
