They described their large class sizes, lack of mental health support for students and colleagues leaving the profession.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">They called on lawmakers to support Gov. Tony Evers\u2019 proposed $2.6 billion funding boost for public schools, as the state contends with an\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/wispolicyforum.org\/research\/the-astounding-state-surplus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">unprecedented budget surplus<\/a>\u00a0most recently\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/misc\/lfb\/revenue_estimates\/187_may_15_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">projected<\/a>\u00a0at $6.9 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In addition to general aid for schools,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/education\/2023\/02\/15\/gov-evers-shares-budget-plans-for-k-12-public-private-schools\/69903639007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">Evers\u2019 plan<\/a>\u00a0would support free meals for all students, more special education funding and more mental health support. Lawmakers, who have already\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/04\/28\/gop-lawmakers-set-to-strip-out-more-than-500-items-from-evers-budget\/70163625007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">tossed some of those provisions<\/a>, are now crafting their own budget proposals through the Joint Finance Committee.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s a desperate situation,\u201d Strieker said. \u201cThe needs are higher than ever. And then from the teacher side, the cost of living goes up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the DPI, here\u2019s the average per-student spending in the past decade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bootsandsabers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/WisconsinSchoolSpending.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bootsandsabers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/WisconsinSchoolSpending.png\" alt width=\"926\" height=\"61\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the past decade, spending is up a whopping 33.88%. If we are spending a full third more on schools than we did a decade ago and the teachers are still complaining about a lack of resources, where is all the money going?
