{"id":3018,"date":"2023-05-23T19:21:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T19:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3018"},"modified":"2023-05-23T20:07:56","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T20:07:56","slug":"wisconsin-supreme-court-sides-with-open-records-request-for-mequon-thiensville-email-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3018","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Supreme Court Sides With Open Records Request for Mequon-Thiensville Email List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/mequon-thiensville-email-list\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/mequon-thiensville-email-list\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/wisconsin-supreme-court-150x150-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Wisconsin should soon have an answer about ballot drop boxes and just who can return absentee ballots. wisconsin supreme court\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Supreme Court is not going to stop a ruling that orders Mequon-Thiensville Schools to turn over a secret email list.<\/p>\n<p>The high court this week refused an appeal from the school district that sought to keep the list from a former Mequon alderman who wanted to email parents and alumni.<\/p>\n<p>The case started back in 2021 when former Alderman Mark Gierl sued Mequon-Thiensville Schools after the district sent an invitation to \u201cThe Talk: A Necessary Conversation on Privilege and Race with Our Children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gierl wanted to offer a counterpoint, but the school district said the email lists were private.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment records are our records,\u201d Tom Kamenick, president and founder of the Wisconsin Transparency Project <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/wisconsin\/article_3aeec338-4fd8-11ed-8695-b7c295962209.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said at the time<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cThat goes for distribution lists government officials use to send out its preferred messages, as the Attorney General has advised for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An appeal court agreed with Gierl <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/wisconsin\/article_bca1e3a6-7742-11ed-a6cb-934a1b295640.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">i<strong>n December of last year<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week, Kamenick said he is \u201cglad the Supreme Court decided to leave the Court of Appeals decision in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mequon-Thiensville Schools, however, continue to promise to fight to keep the lists secret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease understand we have exhausted all efforts to protect the release of your personal information. We stand firm in our belief that releasing your private email addresses does nothing to shine a light of transparency on our operations or communications, which is the intent and purpose of the Public Records Law.
