{"id":3038,"date":"2023-05-24T15:21:31","date_gmt":"2023-05-24T15:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3038"},"modified":"2023-05-24T16:09:16","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T16:09:16","slug":"milwaukee-democrats-warn-of-dire-cuts-without-shared-revenue-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3038","title":{"rendered":"Milwaukee Democrats Warn of Dire Cuts Without Shared Revenue Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/milwaukee-democrats-warn-of-dire-cuts-without-shared-revenue-agreement\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/milwaukee-democrats-warn-of-dire-cuts-without-shared-revenue-agreement\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/maxresdefault-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Milwaukee Votes 2022 Mayor Cavalier Johnson\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee\u2019s mayor is predicting bankruptcy within two years, as well as possibly hundreds of layoffs for police officers and firefighters if Wisconsin lawmakers can\u2019t come to terms on a shared revenue deal.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Cavalier Johnson was one of several people to speak at the Senate\u2019s first hearing on the plan to send as much as $500 million to local governments across the state,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout question, my city\u2019s budgetary situation is dire,\u201d Johnson told senators. \u201cMy city is on a path to catastrophic budget cuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley warned of similar dire circumstances in a weekend op-ed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the County alone, our structural deficit is expected to exceed $100 million by 2028 without any action; under that scenario, we would not have money for local needs,\u201d Crowley wrote. \u201cA projected deficit of this size will inevitably lead to drastic service reductions, which will fall disproportionately upon those who rely on county services the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate\u2019s shared revenue proposal would allow city and county leaders to raise local sales taxes to find the money Johnson and Crowley say they need.<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly\u2019s plan would have voters decide if the local sales taxes should go up.<\/p>\n<p>There is a real fear, however, that Milwaukee and Milwaukee County voters will vote \u201cNo\u201d on the tax hike.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Sen. Mary Felzkowski, R-Irma, said that would lead to a disaster in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt some point cuts are going to happen [in Milwaukee],\u201d Felzkowski said Tuesday. \u201cThey can cut the library by $25 million, 545 police officers, or 209 firemen to offset their pension costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Republicans approved their version of the shared revenue plan last week. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos then declared the plan final, and said he was done negotiating.<\/p>\n<p>The top Democrat in the Wisconsin Senate, Melissa Agard, D-Madison, said she hopes more hearings and more testimony from leaders like Milwaukee\u2019s mayor will change Vos\u2019 mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy conversations with Senate Majority Leader LeMahieu have been productive and we both recognize the need for a sustainable solution.
