{"id":3129,"date":"2023-05-30T15:55:49","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T15:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3129"},"modified":"2023-05-30T16:27:12","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T16:27:12","slug":"uw-president-almost-every-uw-campus-will-lose-money-by-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3129","title":{"rendered":"UW President: Almost Every UW Campus Will Lose Money by 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/uw-president-almost-every-uw-campus-will-lose-money-by-2024\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/uw-president-almost-every-uw-campus-will-lose-money-by-2024\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Collage-Maker-07-Mar-2023-09-21-AM-2745.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"uw tuition increase Diversity &amp; Workforce Development\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UW Campus Will Lose Money\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The head of the University of Wisconsin System says all but three campuses will be running a deficit by the end of the next school year if the university doesn\u2019t get more money.<\/p>\n<p>President Jay Rothman told reporters on Thursday that a new report shows every campus but UW-Madison, UW-Stout, and UW-La Crosse will lose next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at the bottom for public funding, nationally,\u201d Rothman said. \u201cIf we can\u2019t fulfill our potential then all Wisconsinistes will suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fiscal forecast from the university shows 10 campuses will be spending more than they take in by the end of the next school year, The gaps range from an $18 million deficit at UW-Milwaukee to a $400 deficit at UW-Superior.<\/p>\n<p>UW-Madison, according to the report, will finish the 2023-2024 school year $2.8 million in the black. UW-La Crosse will be up $1.1 million, and UW-Stout will end the year $283,000 ahead.<\/p>\n<p>In all, Rothman said, the UW System will see a $60 million deficit next year without new money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, you never cut your way to success. You just can\u2019t do that,\u201d Rothman said. \u201cSo I remain hopeful that we can find other avenues, while still being good financial stewards and looking at the expense line, and cut where we can, and be efficient about it. But we also need to get that further investment<\/p>\n<p>Rothman continues to push lawmakers for more money for the UW System.<\/p>\n<p>Regents already raised tuition for next year, and Rothman has asked lawmakers for an 8% increase in the next state budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to move ourselves up.
