{"id":3160,"date":"2023-05-31T16:30:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T16:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3160"},"modified":"2023-05-31T16:58:11","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T16:58:11","slug":"from-the-desk-of-mike-nichols","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=3160","title":{"rendered":"From the desk of Mike Nichols"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/from-the-desk-of-mike-nichols\/\">https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/from-the-desk-of-mike-nichols\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>An update on our legislative progress in Madison<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p>The biggest policy decisions in the Badger State are typically made during budget deliberations in the first six months of odd-numbered years \u2013 that is, <strong>RIGHT NOW<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Badger Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.badgerinstitute.org\/mandate-for-madison\/\">Mandate for Madison<\/a>, the 300-page policy playbook hand-delivered to all 132 legislative offices and given to the Evers Administration, is at the forefront of those deliberations.<\/p>\n<p>Your generosity helped us produce this historic guide to prosperity and is helping us make sure legislators use it to push for reforms that limit government, improve access to great schools and ensure that victims of crime get swift justice.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Here is how your support has helped<br \/>spur policy <em>ideas<\/em> into tangible <em>action<\/em>:<\/h5>\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#971b2f\">TAXES<\/span>:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0We\u2019re helping lead the movement towards a flat tax, no small feat in the state that pioneered the progressive income tax 100+ years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our flat tax findings were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1uzDblKAm_HDTc1kcv5q5VuErEU_uAdfRvF_dt-MST3Kr0sGD9a7E7ksntssS1pjdVV7HM2dZYw2A7UtoDrJbpN4T2PkkFnfnKUEqHAVGXxCbFIGozPNfkUqVz7OBlb-WYfnMAfLSd8llJ93pJTLPXnzg3u-szqje47-Pr1ex5tC3vpvY8xffxEtx2QcpFbV8r2feIzTj9EHLaHZQotTRHq8=&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cited in a co-sponsorship memo<\/a>\u00a0that was circulated to legislators with the resulting flat tax bill introduced as Senate\/Assembly Bill 1.<\/li>\n<li>Along with our partners at the Tax Foundation, we\u2019ve worked closely with representatives fashioning tax reform in the Assembly.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>President Mike Nichols\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1u56OC92Xn1he7WYHYB_Br1_xhvzOzP_IqZapRcH5-VG03K0dFZIp_4IIXkQS-S2hHgrKjnDqiqyL4h0rLpKj_6qnjzJelXpNqflfAdjDGcFwq2fZvv8ohsCR-SwE5PYmaWAElVhtFjPuKOeR8AmOQ6gt16AqF8K0ZKQdsvsu7zXtJxMtJNy2Neo=&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a>\u00a0on flat tax proposals in both the Assembly and the Senate. The Institute featured Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu and his flat tax proposal on an episode of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1u9r4UX8YJZMe8XgI1FpxGH_mJAH99xKq8iX4fYI__IOHQBv_27zUT9cgIz--YtOvPgwpav9l63QzqjuoziISy55aGaw_LhAD4mEARoSfaMcIB82XKUtd3Dtmh7dWkbcVbTE_wAzyTLUSGTs91gek_Oo1JnKDP9Q8t02-0ZePtJxp9HaQvaBTWpFfO24JgX24xEiT5bAFMuKa_c7md_dPxCM=&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">podcast<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#971b2f\">EDUCATION:<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>We\u2019re working hard to close the funding gap between choice, charter and\u00a0traditional public schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Negotiations are ongoing in the Capitol as we write this but legislation to help lessen or close the funding gap between choice and charter schools and traditional public schools is likely to emerge \u2013 and our work and advocacy alongside that of our partners is pivotal.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1uyZa2O_nUcx_6Gb1M4Ngp3a0KrWv4a1AojEBL6d_keNUwOwYaPzZeGCLPmactzv-xwXx8dEimr4mHSOWKaeWrLLTeYpO3PKNUM5kB_EhFJYPNLsKQhnpgIVLgxxVfTE_gQ==&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Bender<\/a>, our education lobbyist in Madison, is a key voice relied upon by legislators debating school funding.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve bolstered the case for expanding education freedom with our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1uyZa2O_nUcx_wRZyDlMh8Bqln8xk_zrYarJCl0rkw97gixKXBT2jcrynmGN8-Vc7HLLDFfWy2XS_g_Sq9shf0g8XoC-9HU-P39VKuy_Jpi-1u7orTsl96ezuze_6O8_v_Q==&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">choice videos and articles<\/a>\u00a0featuring parents, students and educators sharing how choice and charter schools transformed their lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#971b2f\">CRIME &amp; PUBLIC SAFETY<\/span>:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Our work has been instrumental in the push to reduce the backlog of court cases so victims get justice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two weeks ago, bipartisan lawmakers on the all-important Joint Finance Committee voted to significantly increase pay for prosecutors and defense attorneys in line with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1u5rjDoKRrQux8I-cIaYsnJ8FOCOivmWDv-1AXHzmKbh0qFs6FfgNr91zgWEIX8GwtpYMwQB_rfvdsNERl2nKv_yGJkqDHTdS2TUg5lse5C4ilKyKyPQCrMVrRZ4ihJgQfJggN-UJdYCak7XyjHHpFJ5XWnIPaxy8nwzo36OMcdrafYONkZMPEHFoTo438yH0ocQ-AmvHEdRdqfA9LHH_c50hYPoQ2_1gj0BOfO8Qwe0kC_BkeFg-1Gg=&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommendations<\/a>\u00a0made in the\u00a0<em>Mandate<\/em>\u00a0on court backlogs. Exceedingly low pay was causing turnover rates that slowed down processing of cases and denying justice to countless victims.<\/li>\n<li>Assembly Republicans proposed a sales tax plan for the city of Milwaukee that would put\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1u1dt0NR46DSwdYOKK479DyWRddMmM3gMAXvbtrxsJ7MGI_zkmOGS43JihSFgOrazx45AXcni99zNZU3R84zO6-N0BRgF24k_i4I8ksyJYzYAnoUDyanggXzVNrh5WzoVZisL3XpYLVWjMR7mgwAM4-ahPuhEyx1VOJgl3xsHQvLzkuaVKNY-lHES7xFo9KsfQSh2o_M5msm2equw02FZ49ja1ZNi-sCznQ==&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">police officers back in Milwaukee Public Schools<\/a>\u00a0for the first time since 2016, a recommendation made in the\u00a0<em>Mandate.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We authored a\u00a0<em>Mandate<\/em>\u00a0chapter on expungement reform and submitted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A8wrZ6-k_EQ_CxAvnKrCFbHqRz189qEk8zJ_OPVcylmI5WRecEl1u6LlcACJOsJzjgR8k9N1TRnWJRuvyX_tJXd0RwX19Nf4z3J5PVWA-PdObMm54ZKVhhmtRZn6Yrpky1RfsNwK58tR1AearUIgytH_YngDq2m3mF778QBas7eSz53CIGTlyn5jKkVg5VyglB-9cnM3aFcsXI7fBFbmaTzs7Kw-hw0n&amp;c=JFyg7F9exaGXwW1TZAE8HTGwd_C8AcY8GKDM5j9mFJNeN1xAEAarKw==&amp;ch=_MqJ83V9f6Rklob8tRFawnc8kuy_F1uGNKCYL-Odkmw8OuolyusOgg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testimony<\/a>\u00a0on that issue after introduction of a new bill in Madison.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#971b2f\">WORKFORCE<\/span>:\u00a0Our work helps reject limitations on opportunity for everyone in the Badger State<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We were invited to participate in a 2022 Legislative Council Study Committee on Occupational Licenses, and we worked with staff to help draft reform legislation.
