{"id":4235,"date":"2023-07-13T14:10:26","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T14:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=4235"},"modified":"2023-07-14T15:09:05","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T15:09:05","slug":"featured-despite-billions-of-dollars-in-federal-education-aid-students-are-behind-in-reading-and-math","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=4235","title":{"rendered":"Featured: Despite billions of dollars in federal education aid, students are behind in reading and math"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/reforminggovernment.org\/featured-despite-billions-of-dollars-in-federal-education-aid-students-are-behind-in-reading-and-math\/\">https:\/\/reforminggovernment.org\/featured-despite-billions-of-dollars-in-federal-education-aid-students-are-behind-in-reading-and-math\/<\/a><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/In-The-News-Quinton-1.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Wisconsin school districts were initially slow to spend pandemic stimulus aid, but are now on track to exhaust the money by the September 2024 deadline,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reforminggovernment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ESSER-Report-May-31-extended.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to a new report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Wisconsin\u2019s public schools\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpi.wi.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/imce\/arp\/wi_modified_proposal_includes_jcf_motion_57.pdf%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received nearly $2.4 billion in three rounds of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief,<\/a>\u00a0or ESSER funds, meant to help students make up for learning loss during the pandemic. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\">But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwea.org\/uploads\/Educations-long-covid-2022-23-achievement-data-reveal-stalled-progress-toward-pandemic-recovery_NWEA_Research-brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a new report shows<\/a>\u00a0the federal aid has done little to close the learning gap caused by the pandemic. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Quinton Klabon, senior research director for the conservative Institute for Reforming Government, or IRG,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reforminggovernment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ESSER-Report-May-31-extended.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found Wisconsin school districts are on track<\/a>\u00a0to spend the third round of ESSER funds\u00a0\u2014\u00a0about $1.5 billion \u2014\u00a0by the September 2024 deadline. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\">But Klabon found that $492 million remains unallocated, and 63 school districts have spent less than 33 percent of the funds they received including Green Bay, Beloit, Oshkosh, Manitowoc and Superior.\u00a0Klabon said 13 districts have not spent any of the money. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\">IRG has also raised questions about how districts are spending the money.
