It sets a price floor on goods like gas, groceries, and beer, making it illegal for businesses to sell these products to consumers at a lower cost. It requires gas stations to set their prices at least 9.18% over the wholesale price. You read that correctly: State government is mandating higher prices for consumers.”

Vukmir is correct that such laws hurt consumers by making goods more costly, and their Depression-era rationale about preventing unfair competition long ago was debunked.

The Badger Institute has been making this case for a long time. We commend our work to legislators looking for support in any repeal effort.

Our 2022 “Mandate for Madison” includes a chapter rounding up what economists have found about the deleterious effects of Wisconsin’s minimum markup. As author Ken Wysocky noted, support for repealing the markup has been bipartisan — just as the recent repeal in Minnesota brought together lawmakers and a governor whose ideologies are far apart on most issues.

Earlier, visiting fellow Ike Brannon pointed out how the minimum markup put an especially egregious burden on sick people, preventing retailers from offering low-cost generic prescription drugs.

In a 2016 special report by the Badger Institute (then known as the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute), an array of journalists explored the real-world harm inflicted across Wisconsin’s economy by minimum markup rules.

It was enough to make Badger Institute President Mike Nichols ask why the law was still on the book.

Earlier, in 2008, journalist Christian Schneider quantified just how much pain Wisconsin’s minimum markup inflicted on gasoline buyers.

The post It’s long past time to end Wisconsin’s minimum markup law appeared first on Badger Institute.

This post originally appeared at https://www.badgerinstitute.org/end-wisconsins-minimum-markup-law/ Years of Badger Institute research makes case for repeal…

[10

post-4329","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-badger-institute
["GET
