The News:<\/strong> The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL)\u2019s Equality Under the Law Project<\/a> condemns Appleton East High School\u2019s racially segregated back-to-school events.\u00a0Two back-to-school nights will be held in August, with one night being designated for only \u201cFreshmen Students of Color\u201d and their families.<\/p>\n

The Quote:\u00a0<\/strong>WILL Deputy Counsel, Dan Lennington, stated, \u201cEntering high school as a freshman is an exciting and sometimes anxiety-producing event. It\u2019s simply outrageous that Appleton East is picking and choosing among its incoming freshmen based on race, giving some preferred races a back-to-school night two weeks earlier than other less-preferred races. We\u2019re calling on the District leadership to reject this racist event.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Unconstitutional Discrimination:\u00a0<\/strong>As the United States Supreme Court recently explained in\u00a0Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard,\u00a0race discrimination has no place in public education. Racial preferences are immoral, unconstitutional, and illegal under federal and state law. The United States Constitution contains a \u201cpledge of racial equality\u201d that demands the \u201cequality of treatment before the law for all persons without regard to race or color.\u201d<\/div>\n

No Explanation or Reason:\u00a0<\/strong>Appleton East has not explained, at least publicly, why it planned this segregated event. The post simply says that \u201cwe want all people to feel welcome and included.\u201d Yet excluding some students based on race is no way to make \u201call people feel welcome.\u201d<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

WILL\u2019s Further Action:<\/strong> The letter<\/a> explains that if Appleton East does not remove the post and open the back-to-school nights to all races, WILL shall file a formal complaint with the Office of Civil Rights, United States Department of Education. The complaint will seek a formal investigation of Appleton East\u2019s events.<\/div>\n
