{"id":5187,"date":"2023-08-25T05:03:11","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T05:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5187"},"modified":"2023-08-25T14:05:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T14:05:30","slug":"uw-milwaukee-tells-students-polyamory-has-many-benefits-like-extra-pets-or-petamours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5187","title":{"rendered":"UW-Milwaukee Tells Students Polyamory Has Many \u2018Benefits\u2019 Like Extra Pets, or \u2018Petamours\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsindailystar.com\/news\/uw-milwaukee-tells-students-polyamory-has-many-benefits-like-extra-pets-or-petamours\/gastarnewsstaff\/2023\/08\/25\/\">https:\/\/wisconsindailystar.com\/news\/uw-milwaukee-tells-students-polyamory-has-many-benefits-like-extra-pets-or-petamours\/gastarnewsstaff\/2023\/08\/25\/<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<h5>by Marya Ruth Dunning<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee\u2019s LGBTQ+ Resource Center recently posted an Instagram infographic regarding one of the \u201chidden gems\u201d of polyamory: \u201cpetamours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post defines \u201cpetamours\u201d as \u201ca pet you get to enjoy due to being part of a polyamorous relationship or polycule.\u201d The term is a portmanteau of the words \u201cmetamour,\u201d which the Polyamory Dictionary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polydictionary.org\/metamour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">defines<\/a>\u00a0as \u201c[someone] that your romantic partner is in such a relationship with, but you are not,\u201d and pet.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CvhuQDNNAC6\/?img_index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">post<\/a>\u00a0distinguishes between the terms \u201cpolyamorous relationship\u201d and \u201cpolycule,\u201d defining the former as \u201ca relationship where at least [one] person is consensually involved with more than one partner\u201d and the latter as \u201ca label to describe all people connected in or by\u201d a relationship in which more than two people are involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with bonding with your [metamours], you get to meet and love their pets, too,\u201d the infographic continues. \u201cPetamours can also be a way to see if pet ownership is right for you. You also might bond with a new type of pet and fall in love!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cdownside\u201d of petamours, the infographic concludes, is the grief of losing a pet when a relationship ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you create a strong bond with a pet, it can be hard to lose that connection. Depending on the situation, you might even miss your petamour more than your ex-partner or [metamours].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0has reported on institutes of higher education promoting polyamory.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017,\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=8722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that the University of North Florida planned to host a workshop titled \u201cPolyamory vs. Cheating: Lessons from a Former Serial Monogamist\u201d as a part of its annual \u201cSex Week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university described the event as providing \u201coutreach, education, and support for those involved in or seeking relationships with non-traditional structures.\u201d The event framed polyamory \u201cas an alternative to cheating\u201d and was designed for students who identified as \u201cpoly-curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=8744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">canceled<\/a>\u00a0this workshop along with several others, including one titled \u201cLove Without Limits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We] were concerned that the issues of consent, safety, and healthy relationships were being lost in the week\u2019s activities,\u201d a spokesperson for the school stated, citing the apparent original purpose of the school\u2019s Sex Week. The school also reassured\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0that \u201cno taxpayer money, tuition, or student fees\u201d were used for the purposes of the event.<\/p>\n<p><em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0has reached out to all individuals and groups mentioned for comment and will update accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013<\/p>\n<p><em>Marya Ruth Dunning is a sophomore at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia and is double-majoring in criminology and psychology with a minor in Spanish.
