{"id":5366,"date":"2023-09-03T22:57:41","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T22:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5366"},"modified":"2023-09-03T23:17:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-03T23:17:16","slug":"uw-madison-student-attacked-suspect-at-large-in-brutal-assault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5366","title":{"rendered":"UW-Madison Student Attacked: Suspect at Large in Brutal Assault"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/uw-madison-student-attacked-suspect\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/uw-madison-student-attacked-suspect\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/uw-madison-student-attacked.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"uw-madison student attacked\" title=\"uw-madison student attacked\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>UW-Madison student attacked: The suspect is at large.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A female college student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison was left in critical condition after what appears to be a brutal and random attack downtown, <a href=\"http:\/\/This remains an active investigation.\u00a0 Released 09\/03\/2023 at 2:13 PM by PIO Stephanie Fryer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madison police say.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a press release, the Madison Police Department wrote that a woman \u201c<span class=\"span5\">was brutally attacked early Sunday morning (September 3, 2023) downtown\u201d in what appeared to be a \u201cstranger assault.\u201d They confirmed she is a student at UW-Madison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The police chief, Shon Barnes, speaking in a news conference, called it a \u201csevere attack.\u201d She had \u201csevere signs of physical trauma,\u201d according to the chief. He said medical professionals are working to stabilize the victim, and so it\u2019s not yet clear the extent of her injuries, Barnes said. They haven\u2019t spoken to the victim yet, he said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"span5\">\u201cThe woman was found along the 500 block of W. Wilson St. around 3:20 a.m. A person living in the area called for police after noticing the victim was severely beaten,\u201d police wrote. There is a sidewalk and there are apartment complexes where the woman was found, Barnes said.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victim was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remains in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon,\u201d police wrote.<span class=\"span5\">\u00a0 \u201cDetectives and investigators are swabbing the area for biological evidence and recanvassing the area on Sunday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Police noted: \u201cThey are also searching for additional witnesses and surveillance video. Detectives are specifically looking for video from people who live within a few blocks of the W. Wilson and N. Bedford intersection and have video from 2-4am.<\/p>\n<p>Video and information can be shared by contacting \u00a0the Madison Police Department\u2019s non-emergency line at 608-255-2345 or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014. Information can also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers at p3tips.com.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investigation is in its preliminary stages right now. We have called in numerous Madison Police personnel on this holiday weekend to conduct a thorough and complete investigation,\u201d said Assistant Chief Paige Valenta, who oversees the department\u2019s investigative units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatrols in this area will be increased in the area for the time being. Residents are encouraged not to walk alone in the area, particularly at night. People are also encouraged be aware of their surroundings and to notify someone of their departures and arrivals if walking alone the in the area,\u201d police wrote<\/p>\n<p>The campus police chief and dean of Students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison sent out a statement to the campus community. It reads:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">To the UW\u2013Madison Community<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re reaching out this weekend to share information about a violent and severe attack <a href=\"https:\/\/wisc.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=f1e257faab7683514ee0f1658&amp;id=ccd16ac9c2&amp;e=c3dcde8fb6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/wisc.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Df1e257faab7683514ee0f1658%26id%3Dccd16ac9c2%26e%3Dc3dcde8fb6&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1693867164311000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1FIdiJFrQT3IPoogbJ_fj7\">that occurred off-campus early Sunday morning in downtown Madison around the area of West Wilson and Bedford Street.<\/a> The victim is a UW\u2013Madison student.<\/p>\n<p>We are deeply concerned for this individual, keeping them and their family in our thoughts and providing all possible support.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect or suspects are still at large. As a result, police are increasing patrols and visibility as well as urging the community to remain vigilant and maintain awareness of their safety and surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>Our partners at the City of Madison Police Department are conducting a thorough and comprehensive investigation. University Police (UWPD) is assisting and offering resources.
