{"id":5480,"date":"2023-09-08T05:03:35","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T05:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5480"},"modified":"2023-09-08T05:40:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T05:40:07","slug":"wisconsin-democrats-launch-effort-to-defend-protasiewicz-from-impeachment-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5480","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Democrats Launch Effort to Defend Protasiewicz from Impeachment Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsindailystar.com\/politics\/wisconsin-democrats-launch-effort-to-defend-protasiewicz-from-impeachment-talk\/tcsquare\/2023\/09\/08\/\">https:\/\/wisconsindailystar.com\/politics\/wisconsin-democrats-launch-effort-to-defend-protasiewicz-from-impeachment-talk\/tcsquare\/2023\/09\/08\/<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<h5>by Benjamin Yount<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Democrats announced late Tuesday a $4 million plan to target Republican lawmakers who talk about impeaching Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came in a closed-media call by Wisconsin Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>WisPolitics quotes Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler as saying \u201cThe anti-democratic, unconstitutional threat to impeach Janet Protasiewicz would constitute a political disaster for the Republican Party and for our system of government at large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans are talking about impeaching Protasiewicz for what she said about Wisconsin\u2019s political maps and abortion law during her run for the Supreme Court last spring.<\/p>\n<p>Protasiewicz (pictured above) called the maps \u201crigged\u201d and \u201cunfair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans say Protasiewicz prejudiced herself with those comments.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Protasiewicz released a letter from the Wisconsin Judicial Commission that explains the commission\u2019s decision to dismiss those formal claims against her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt its recent meeting, the commission considered several complaints alleging that you violated Supreme Court Rule 60.06(3)(b) and other related provisions of the Code of Judicial Conduct as a candidate for Supreme Court justice, by making statements of your personal views concerning several contentious political issues during your campaign,\u201d the Commission wrote. \u201cPlease be advised that the commission dismissed these complaints without action and that commission proceedings are confidential pursuant to state law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said the Judicial Commission\u2019s letter simply means Protasiewicz won\u2019t be punished.<\/p>\n<p>Vos said the commission didn\u2019t say anything about Protasiewicz\u2019s ability to fairly hear cases on redistricting or abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Judicial Commission\u2019s memo, released today, only muddies the waters,\u201d Vos said in a statement. \u201cThe judicial commission decided Justice Protasiewicz could not be sanctioned for what she said on the campaign trail. The commission did not address whether she can sit on a case after accepting $10 million in campaign funds from the Democrat Party \u2013 the interested party in the redistricting case. Nor did they address whether she may sit on a case having made commitments for how she would rule that are inconsistent with the obligation to be impartial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, accused Vos and other Republicans of targeting Protasiewicz and\/or playing politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns out the ridiculous allegations made by Wisconsin Republicans against Justice Protasiewicz \u2013 made to justify attempts to silence her \u2013 have already been dismissed by a state judiciary disciplinary panel.
