{"id":5539,"date":"2023-09-12T03:18:45","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T03:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5539"},"modified":"2023-09-12T04:02:21","modified_gmt":"2023-09-12T04:02:21","slug":"recuse-janet-protasiewiczs-campaign-strategists-deep-fair-maps-ties-exposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5539","title":{"rendered":"RECUSE: Janet Protasiewicz\u2019s Campaign Strategist\u2019s Deep \u2018Fair Maps\u2019 Ties Exposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/sachin-chheda\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/sachin-chheda\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The U.S. Constitution holds that a judge \u201cmust recuse if they have a financial interest in the case, or if there is a strong possibility of bias.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz\u2019s senior campaign strategist helped found and co-chaired a prominent \u201cfair maps\u201d coalition with ties to petitioners and a law firm representing petitioners in the pending redistricting case before the court, spurring new bias concerns as Republicans call for her recusal.<\/p>\n<p>Through the coalition and a second group, Sachin Chheda has been extensively involved for years in leading the efforts in Wisconsin to get the courts to undo the Republican legislative maps that are the very issue now before the court. He was chairman and co-founder of the Fair Maps Coalition and Fair Elections Project, both devoted to that effort.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Protasiewicz prejudged the cases in comments on the campaign trail, calling the maps \u201crigged\u201d and \u201cunfair\u201d in favor of Republicans in language that closely mirrors the verbiage of Chheda and his groups, who have railed about the Republican maps. <a href=\"https:\/\/acefiling.wicourts.gov\/document\/eFiled\/2023AP001399\/695461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans have filed a motion<\/a> to force her recusal, arguing that the Democratic Party of Wisconsin contributed nearly $10 million to her campaign. \u201cShe invited a legal challenge to replace them,\u201d the Republican brief says, adding that she \u201crevealed how she would<br \/>\ndecide it,\u201d saying: \u201cIf you look at the dissent in that maps case, that dissent is what I<br \/>\nwill tell you I agree with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just hours after Justice Protasiewicz was inaugurated, left-leaning groups filed an original action petition asking the Supreme Court to throw out the current legislative maps and redraw the lines based on provisions in state law.<\/p>\n<p>This has long been Chheda\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSachin Chheda, a Democratic political strategist and adviser to Protasiewicz\u2019s campaign, acknowledged that a Protasiewicz win could lead to the court tossing out the 1849 abortion ban and the current legislative maps,\u201d the liberal outlet, Wisconsin Watch, <a href=\"https:\/\/pbswisconsin.org\/news-item\/wisconsin-supreme-courts-fractured-opinions-leave-state-without-clear-guidance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in March.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On March 1, 2023, Protasiewicz\u2019s campaign paid Nation Consulting, where Chheda worked, $35,000. On Feb. 4, 2023, the campaign paid Nation Consulting $20,000.<\/p>\n<p>Although he presents that he\u2019s after non-partisan maps even while railing against the Republican maps, Chheda is a relentless anti-Republican partisan on social media. \u201cW<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">hat a douchebag liar,\u201d he posted on X recently of a respected conservative lawyer. \u201cWatch my testimony from the farcical hearing on the maps last year, yes the GOP has a small geographic advantage, but not a freakin\u2019 supermajority when the vote is close to 50\/50.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/09\/01\/what-to-know-about-impeachment-and-judicial-recusal-in-wisconsin\/70728762007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The U.S. Constitution holds that<\/a> a judge \u201cmust recuse if they have a financial interest in the case, <strong>or if there is a strong possibility of bias<\/strong>.\u201d State judicial conduct codes hold that a judge must recuse when \u201cthe judge has a personal bias or prejudice concerning a party or a party\u2019s lawyer or personal knowledge of disputed evidentiary facts concerning the proceeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The code also says a judge should recuse if they \u201cmade a public statement that commits, or appears to commit, the judge with respect to \u201can issue in the proceeding\u201d or \u201cthe controversy in the proceeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pending case petitioner Jerry Iverson \u201cwas a member of the Fair Maps Coalition and is currently active in the Democratic Party of Wisconsin,\u201d according to a legal brief filed by the petitioners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111582 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/iverson-1024x398-1.png\" alt=\"jerry iverson\" width=\"1024\" height=\"398\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Petitioner Ruben Anthony <a href=\"https:\/\/recombobulationarea.substack.com\/p\/wisconsin-most-gerrymandered-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was a speaker at a rally<\/a> sponsored by the Fair Maps Coalition against the legislative maps. He spoke at a podium bearing a Fair Maps Coalition sign that read, \u201cend gerrymandering.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Petitioner Tia Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/lwvbeloit.clubexpress.com\/content.aspx?page_id=22&amp;club_id=519400&amp;module_id=471580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was identified<\/a> as a team member on a Fair Maps Coalition effort to redraw maps in Beloit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-111601 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/tia-1024x621-1.png\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The League of Women Voters, a Fair Maps Coalition member, wrote on its website that the petitioners\u2019 law firm \u201cLaw Forward\u201d is a \u201clead team member\u201d of Chheda\u2019s\u00a0 organization: \u201cJoin Fair Maps Coalition Lead Team members, including Law Forward, Fair Elections Project, League of Women Voters, and Wisconsin Democracy Campaign to learn more about what the Supreme Court decision means for democracy in Wisconsin,\u201d it reads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The state Supreme Court, then conservative-controlled, adopted the Republican maps as part of a mandatory injunction just over a year ago, adopting a \u201cleast change approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This came after Democratic Gov. Tony Evers created a People\u2019s Maps Commission that still gave Republicans a 55-44 advantage in the Assembly. Initially, the Wisconsin Supreme Court selected Evers\u2019 maps, but the U.S. Supreme Court reversed that selection and the Wisconsin Supreme Court then selected the GOP legislative maps. [Read a primer on the redistricting maps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/wisconsin-redistricting-legislative-maps\/\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>Alongside screenshots of Chheda testifying, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairmapswi.com\/wi-maps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Fair Maps Coalition\u2019s website reads<\/a>, \u201cApril 4, 2023, a pro-democracy Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice was elected raising hopes that the current rigged voting district maps will be thrown out and new, fairer maps will be implemented,\u201d referring to Protasiewicz.<\/p>\n<p>Chheda, whose profile picture on X was a picture of himself with Protasiewicz until a few days ago, isn\u2019t just a small player in the Democratic effort to get the court to overturn the legislative maps; he is arguably THE most important player in Wisconsin, bringing together a coalition of organizations to achieve just that. He\u2019s arguably the architect of the efforts to overturn the Republican redistricting maps, and helping run Protasiewicz\u2019s campaign appears to have been one way to achieve his long-standing public goals to do just that.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111999\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111999\" style=\"width: 1091px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-111999 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/378069233_632795412316046_4834089531081552058_n-e1694485752935.jpg\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"1091\" height=\"1093\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Janet protasiewicz with sachin chheda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor the last decade, they\u2019ve all been relentless in their pursuit of nonpartisan redistricting reform in Wisconsin. Led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairmapswi.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition<\/a> (FMC), these folks have done everything legally within their power to bring about a change in the way legislative voting districts are drawn,\u201d Carlene Becher, organizing director with the Fair Maps Coalition, wrote on the blog Recombobulation Area.<\/p>\n<p>However, Chheda is anything but non-partisan. \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">This is something that\u2019s so hateful towards Wisconsin, must be an idea that was generated by Robin Vos,\u201d he tweeted recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of the maps debate, he wrote, \u201cTh<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">e fact is, the court will decide if it\u2019s allowable. And whether there\u2019s a limit. Robin don\u2019t like that? Too. Bad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Becher\u2019s blog post noted that \u201cback in 2013, a bunch of lawyers and pro-democracy activists met as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairelectionsproject.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fair Elections Project<\/a> to strategize about how to undo the 2011 gerrymandered maps that were already wreaking havoc on democratic institutions in Wisconsin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-112000 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_9965.jpg\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"1170\" height=\"971\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The blog added: \u201cThe Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition was formed to provide advocacy and support for the ongoing litigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Supreme Court Redistricting Lawsuits<\/h2>\n<p>In 2019, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that partisan gerrymandering arguments were not a matter for federal court, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox6now.com\/news\/high-court-ruling-likely-ends-wisconsin-redistricting-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Fox6 article described<\/a> Chheda\u2019s group as having \u201corganized the Wisconsin lawsuit,\u201d and quoted him as saying, \u201cour work continues.\u201d A press release from Chheda in 2016 said his Fair Elections Project \u201corganized and launched the lawsuit\u201d that year seeking to have legislative maps ruled unconstitutional. That lawsuit involved the 2011 redistricting maps, which are cited in the current litigation.<\/p>\n<p>The press release says the plaintiffs were \u201crepresented by an all-star team of attorneys,\u201d naming Doug Poland, co-founder of Law Forward. He is one of the attorneys for petitioners in the current redistricting lawsuit before the court.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111603\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111603\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-111603 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sachin-1.jpg\" alt=\"sachin chheda\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sachin chheda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Law Forward i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidestar.org\/profile\/84-2803392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">s a non-profit<\/a> that lists Nicole Safar as its principal officer and assets of more than $3 million, according to Guidestar. Its funders are not clear.<\/p>\n<p>Law Forward\u2019s president was listed as Jeff Mandell, secretary\/treasurer was Judy Ziewacz, and directors were Andrew Disch, John Miller, Christine Bremer Muggli, and Safar. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2022\/protasiewicz-campaign-judge-janet-protasiewicz-announces-endorsements-of-judge-derek-mosley-ed-fallone-and-over-170-leaders-in-the-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muggli endorsed<\/a> Protasiewicz, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdc.org\/component\/wdcfinancedatabase\/searchadvanced?active_search=1&amp;ic_name=bremer%20muggli,%20christine&amp;start=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is a campaign donor<\/a> to Protasiewicz, Karofsky, and Dallet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-112001 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_9966.jpg\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1569\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Its 2021 tax form shows its contributions and grants exploded that year from $783,990 to $3,310,684.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairmapswi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">When you go on the website<\/a> of the Fair Maps Coalition a box pops up blaring that Law Forward has filed a redistricting petition before the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOn April 18, 2022, the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition hosted a briefing on the new state voting maps and the next steps forward in Wisconsin\u2019s fight for fair election maps,\u201d the website says in a timeline that includes two screenshots of Chheda advocating for new maps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOn April 4, 2023, a pro-democracy Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice was elected raising hopes that the current rigged voting district maps will be thrown out and new, fairer maps will be implemented,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<h2>More Ties to Sachin Chheda<\/h2>\n<p>Multiple petitioners <a href=\"http:\/\/lwvappleton2.org\/archive\/annMtgPkts\/2022%20Annual%20Meeting%20Packet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also have ties<\/a> to Chheda as members <a href=\"https:\/\/my.lwv.org\/wisconsin\/whitewater-area\/event\/redistricting-and-fair-maps-annemarie-mcclellan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">or leaders <\/a>in the Coalition member League of Women Voters. The executive director of the League of Women Voters <a href=\"https:\/\/my.lwv.org\/wisconsin\/article\/debra-cronmiller-lwvwi-named-new-wisconsin-fair-maps-coalition-chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently took over <\/a>leadership of the Fair Maps Coalition from Chheda, who \u201cwill continue to direct the Fair Elections Project and serve as a member of the Coalition\u2019s Lead Team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The League of Women Voters press release confirms he is co-founder of Fair Maps Coalition and served as its chair\/co-chair since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Chheda is listed as working on Protasiewicz\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2023\/4\/10\/2163159\/-Janet-Protasiewicz-defeated-Dan-Kelly-for-Wisconsin-Supreme-Court-Thank-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by Daily Kos.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2023\/nation-consulting-longtime-partner-sachin-chheda-leaving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He said<\/a> in July that he was \u201ccelebrating\u201d her investiture; in June, Chheda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@upnorthnews\/video\/7247984397603851562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Up North News <\/a>that litigation would be grounded in the state Constitution, a new angle designed to make federal appeal to SCOTUS more difficult. The Coalition page<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile\/100064956900849\/search\/?q=protasiewicz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> touted Protasiewicz.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-112002 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_9969.jpg\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1215\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Chheda helped run the campaigns of two other liberal justices as well; he \u201cworked on\u201d the last three liberal justices\u2019 campaigns, according to Up North News, which reported in June that Chheda \u201cworked to support the campaigns for Protasiewicz, Justice Jill Karofsky, and Justice Rebecca Dallet.\u201d Chheda and his former consulting business received thousands of dollars f<a href=\"https:\/\/cfis.wi.gov\/ReportsOutputFiles\/0106129JanuaryContinuing202028e231142020114731AMCF-2Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rom Karofsky\u2019s campaign.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Far from distancing themselves from him, we\u2019re told the liberal justices considered making Chheda the director of state courts, although they eventually abandoned that idea.<\/p>\n<p>Sachin Chheda \u201cfounded the Fair Elections Project, and was a key organizer in launching the Whitford case in which a federal district court ruled Wisconsin\u2019s legislative maps unconstitutional for being a partisan gerrymander, the first such ruling in American history. That case eventually reached the US Supreme Court,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairelectionsproject.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his website bio reads<\/a>. \u201cSachin was also a cofounder, and currently serves as chair, of the WI Fair Maps Coalition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chheda has been a registered lobbyist for the project; the state lobbying website describes <a href=\"https:\/\/lobbying.wi.gov\/Who\/PrincipalInformation\/2021REG\/Information\/9495?tab=Efforts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it as<\/a>, \u201cfighting for fair redistricting around the country by inspiring and supporting litigation, legislation, and public advocacy to stop partisan gerrymandering. The goal is to end map-rigging, so that instead of politicians choosing their voters, voters can choose their elected officials, and elections will again be meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The page continues, \u201cThe Fair Elections Project is a member organization of the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition, whose mission is to advocate for and enact, in law and practice, an independent and nonpartisan redistricting method in Wisconsin.\u201d But Chheda\u2019s own comments make it clear that the effort is targeting <em>the Republican-drawn maps<\/em><em> on the state Supreme Court.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riponpress.com\/news\/we-do-not-want-a-democratic-map-or-a-republican-map-peoples-maps-commission-visits\/article_49991f08-7863-11eb-b898-3ba394137d6a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Ripon Press<\/a>, \u201cIn his testimony to the People\u2019s Maps Commission, Fair Elections Project Director Sachin Chheda said 2011 was the first time the state was truly gerrymandered, meaning boundaries were intentionally manipulated to establish an unfair political advantage for one party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re basically willing to spend any amount of taxpayer money to try to rig the maps and retain power for another 10 years,\u201d said Chheda, <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2021\/04\/01\/restoring-sanity-to-wisconsin-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the liberal Wisconsin Examiner<\/a>, which described Chheda\u2019s group as \u201ca group dedicated to fighting partisan gerrymandering around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Law Forward<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawforward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3Z88697-2023-08-29-Brief-in-Response-to-Motion-to-Recuse-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> has helped author a brief <\/a>arguing that Protasiewicz should not have to recuse herself from the maps case.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-111575 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/lawforward2.jpg\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"847\" height=\"502\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-111572 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/fairmaps-1024x368-1.png\" alt=\"Sachin Chheda\" width=\"1024\" height=\"368\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sachin Chheda\u2019s LinkedIn page says he left Fair Elections Project in August 2023, which is when Protasiewicz was sworn in on the court, flipping the majority toward liberals.<\/p>\n<p>Chheda has used very similar language to Protasiewicz in describing the current legislative maps as \u201crigged.\u201d He wrote in August that it\u2019s \u201cindisputable\u201d that the maps are \u201crigged,\u201d and criticized Republican leader Robin Vos\u2019s comments on impeachment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-111580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sachin10.jpg\" alt=\"sachin chheda\" width=\"967\" height=\"1008\" title=\"Sachin Chheda\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Fair Maps Coalition group\u2019s efforts include letters to the editor, testifying at legislative hearings \u201cagainst the rigged maps\u201d and SB 621, rallies in 17 cities, and much more. Chheda\u2019s Fair Elections Project is a coalition partner, per its website. Sachin Chheda spoke in favor of the People\u2019s Map Commission maps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbreak.com\/news\/2428603414382-after-heated-debate-senate-passes-gop-voting-maps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press conference.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawforward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3Z88697-2023-08-29-Brief-in-Response-to-Motion-to-Recuse-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The petitioners in the Law Forward pending case <\/a>are: Rebecca Clarke, Ruben Anthony, Terry Dawson, Dana Glasstein, Ann Groves-Lloyd, Carl Hujet, Jerry Iverson, Tia Johnson, Angie Kirst, Selika Lawton, Fabian Maldonado, Annemarie McClellan, James McNett, Brittany Muriello, Ela Joosten (Pari) Schils, Nathaniel Slack, Mary Smith-Johnson, Denise (Dee) Sweet, and Gabrielle Young.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers in the case work for the Campaign Legal Center of Washington D.C. and Chicago, the Election Law Clinic at Harvard Law School, Law Forward, Stafford Rosenbaum LLP (lawyers Douglas Poland and Jeffrey Mandell), and the Arnold &amp; Porter Kaye Scholer LLP law firm in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The Law Forward lawyers are Daniel Lenz, T.R. Edwards, Elizabeth M. Pierson, and Scott B. Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>Also at issue is the massive amount of money that Protasiewicz\u2019s campaign took from the Wisconsin Democratic Party. Many of the petitioners have ties to the party.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Are the Petitioners?<\/h2>\n<p>Clarke, a Sheboygan County Supervisor, is a failed Democratic state Assembly candidate and a member of the Sheboygan County Democrats who \u201cregularly canvasses for and donates to Democratic candidates.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sheboyganclarke\/photos\/a.138361134513434\/270871881262358\/?type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She pushed<\/a> a Fair Maps Coalition event on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ruben Anthony is the president of the Urban League of Greater Madison and was a member of Evers\u2019 People\u2019s Maps Commission. The Fair Maps Coalition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2022\/fair-maps-coalition-over-150-people-attend-fair-courts-end-gerrymandering-rally-outside-the-state-capitol-in-madison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced in a press release<\/a> that Anthony was a speaker at a \u201cfair maps\u201d rally. The League of Women Voters wrote, \u201cmore than 1000 members of the Fair Maps Coalition, including many League members rallied last Friday at 19 locations around the state,\u201d to \u201cend gerrymandering,\u201d naming Anthony as an attendee.<a href=\"https:\/\/recombobulationarea.substack.com\/p\/wisconsin-most-gerrymandered-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Terry Dawson is a retired public librarian who volunteered for campaigns through the Democratic Party of Outagamie County.<\/p>\n<p>Dana Glasstein is an English as a Second Language instructor from Mequon. She is an active member of the Ozaukee County Democrats and trained canvassers and phone bankers in 2020 and 2022. <a href=\"http:\/\/lwvappleton2.org\/archive\/annMtgPkts\/2022%20Annual%20Meeting%20Packet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dawson has been <\/a>a recent voting member of League of Women Voters Appleton.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ann Groves-Lloyd, the mayor of Lodi, was an administrator at the University of Wisconsin and is a member of the Columbia County Democrats and regularly canvasses for Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Carl Hujet is a retired custodian and newspaper worker who is described as a \u201cretired union member.\u201d He is on the board of the Brown County Democrats. He\u2019s donated multiple times, albeit in small amounts, to the campaign of sitting Justice Jill Karofsky.<\/p>\n<p>Iverson worked in various sectors and was a \u201cmember of the Fair Maps Coalition and is currently active in the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tia Johnson is a rental property owner and former teacher who is a member of the Rock County Democrats.
