{"id":566,"date":"2023-02-24T01:36:24","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T02:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=566"},"modified":"2023-02-24T15:12:05","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T15:12:05","slug":"wisconsin-dairy-farm-groups-unhappy-with-proposed-fda-milk-guidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=566","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Dairy, Farm Groups Unhappy With Proposed FDA \u2018Milk\u2019 Guidance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/fda-milk-guidance\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/fda-milk-guidance\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"714\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Collage-Maker-23-Feb-2023-08.34-PM.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"FDA \u2018Milk\u2019 Guidance\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Global Disinformation Index\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, dairy and other farm groups in America\u2019s Dairyland are not happy that the federal government wants to allow other people to use the term \u201cmilk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FDA this week released its draft guidance on so-called milk alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FDA determined that consumers generally understand that [plant-based milk alternatives] do not contain milk and choose to purchase PBMA because they are not milk,\u201d the FDA\u2019s draft guidance states. \u201cHowever, many consumers may not be aware of the nutritional differences between milk and PBMA products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Edge Dairy Cooperative, one of Wisconsin\u2019s largest dairy groups, on Wednesday blasted plant-based milks as \u201cinferior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nutritional benefits of dairy products are superior to imitation products, and consumers should be well-informed using proper labeling and terms. Dairy foods, including milk, are part of a healthy eating pattern and provide consumers with healthy and nutritious food options,\u201d Edge President Brody Stapel said.<\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Farm Bureau also said milk alternatives are trying to use the name \u201cmilk\u201d to infer a health benefit that may not be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers choose milk because it is a trusted term associated with quality and nutrition. This trust has been built over generations of Wisconsin dairy farmers who take pride in producing a quality product with regulations that reflect that quality,\u201d Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation President Kevin Krentz said. \u201cPlant-based milk alternatives are not milk.
