{"id":5797,"date":"2023-09-22T23:05:26","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T23:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5797"},"modified":"2023-09-23T00:13:48","modified_gmt":"2023-09-23T00:13:48","slug":"watchdog-files-challenge-to-wisconsin-impeachment-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=5797","title":{"rendered":"Watchdog files challenge to Wisconsin impeachment panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/watchdog-files-challenge-to-wisconsin-impeachment-panel\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/watchdog-files-challenge-to-wisconsin-impeachment-panel\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Collage-Maker-13-Sep-2023-08-51-AM-8360.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Wisconsin impeachment panel Protasiewicz Impeachment\" title=\"Wisconsin impeachment panel\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A national government watchdog filed a complaint based on the group of former Wisconsin Supreme Court justices who are offering the state\u2019s assembly speaker advice on impeachment.<\/p>\n<p>American Oversight, which says it\u2019s a nonpartisan, nonprofit government watchdog, filed a complaint with Dane County\u2019s district attorney, asking him to void any action that comes from the panel.<\/p>\n<p>The group says Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is breaking the state\u2019s open meetings rules by asking the former justices for their advice on how to possibly move forward with an impeachment of Justice Janet Protasiewicz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaker Vos has convened a secret panel to quickly craft recommendations for the potential impeachment of a newly elected state supreme court justice \u2013 a fundamentally anti-democratic action that is of great public importance and interest. His efforts to shroud the work and the identities of the panelists in secrecy violates Wisconsin\u2019s Open Meetings Law as well as the state\u2019s strong and well-established commitment to government transparency,\u201d American Oversight Executive Director Heather Sawyer said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Vos last week said he was reaching out to former justices to get a sense of how the state could move forward with an impeachment proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am asking a panel of former members of the state Supreme Court to review and advise what the criteria are for impeachment,\u201d Vos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/wisconsin\/article_46115e56-5257-11ee-a675-bfcd3c1223e7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said at the time<\/a>. \u201cAnd to be able to go to the next step of this process if we\u2019re not able to determine an off path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vos has not said just which justices he has reached out to.<\/p>\n<p>American Oversight says Wisconsin\u2019s open meeting laws require he make that information public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to reports, the panel comprises three people, including former Justice David T. Prosser, but Vos has refused to disclose the identities of the other members.
