{"id":6314,"date":"2023-10-12T11:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T11:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=6314"},"modified":"2023-10-12T11:11:24","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T11:11:24","slug":"tammy-baldwins-weak-record-on-israel-jewish-group-called-her-extreme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=6314","title":{"rendered":"Tammy Baldwin\u2019s Weak Record on Israel: Jewish Group Called Her \u2018Extreme\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/tammy-baldwins-record-on-israel\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/tammy-baldwins-record-on-israel\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tammy Baldwin\u2019s record of supporting Israel has been weak over the years.<\/p>\n<p>She proudly supported the Iran deal, opposed sanctions against Iran, voted against an act making it illegal to boycott Israel, opposed Israel\u2019s annexation of the West Bank, supported the creation of a Palestinian State, and voted against an act that would give security funding to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Baldwin\u2019s record on Israel has been controversial for years. In 2012, a pro-Israel group ran an advertisement that called her \u201cextreme\u201d and weak on defense. Former Gov. Tommy Thompson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/tommy-thompson-tammy-baldwin-anti-jewish_n_1967075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called Baldwin<\/a> \u201canti-Israel\u201d during that race, a claim she denied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past decade, Tammy Baldwin has established a foreign policy record of extremism,\u201d Noah Pollak, of the pro-Israel, conservative Emergency Committee for Israel,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/burns-haberman\/2012\/10\/pro-israel-group-airs-ads-against-baldwin-138152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> told Politico<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet now that she\u2019s running for Senate, she\u2019s attempting to obscure that record \u2014 in fact, her campaign website doesn\u2019t even include a foreign policy section. Since she doesn\u2019t want to tell the voters where she stands, we will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(A recent check of Baldwin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tammybaldwin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign website<\/a> still does not state her stance on foreign policy issues, including Israel.)<\/p>\n<h2>Tammy Baldwin\u2019s Weak Record on Israel<\/h2>\n<p>Since that time, she has taken a number of positions that are weak on Israel. The American Jewish Congress<a href=\"https:\/\/ajcongress.org\/jewishpoliticalguide\/senators\/tammy-baldwin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> outlines her record.<\/a> According to the AJC, Baldwin:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Supported the Iran Deal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baldwin.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/us-senator-tammy-baldwin-statement-in-support-of-iran-nuclear-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baldwin said in a press release<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m proud that America led six countries toward an historic international agreement with Iran. I believe we are right to choose a path of international diplomacy to achieve our goal of verifiably preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/israel-middle-east\/articles\/why-iran-deal-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Tablet Magazine<\/a>, in describing the Iran deal, \u201cBarack Obama legalized a terror state\u2019s nuclear weapons program.\u201d Tablet excoriated the \u201ctens of billions of dollars that Obama paid the clerical regime, which included planeloads of cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, when then President Donald Trump terminated the Iran deal, <a href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefings-statements\/president-donald-j-trump-ending-united-states-participation-unacceptable-iran-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he said it <\/a>\u201cenriched the Iranian regime and enabled its malign behavior, while at best delaying its ability to pursue nuclear weapons and allowing it to preserve nuclear research and development.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Voted Against the \u2018Strengthening America\u2019s Security in the Middle East Act of 2019\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignaffairs.house.gov\/legislation\/h-r-336-strengthening-americas-security-in-the-middle-east-act-of-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">That act authorized <\/a>funds for Israel, along with other measures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/the-strengthening-america-s-security-in-the-middle-east-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The bill would have<\/a> struck a cooperation agreement with Jordan to fight ISIS, authorize sanctions against Syria unless it promised not to target civilians, extend an existing loan guarantee program with Israel, and make it \u201cillegal under federal statute to boycott Israel,\u201d as well as \u201cauthorizing security assistance to Israel over a 10-year period pursuant to the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Supports the Two State Solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baldwin.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/democrats-reject-trump-middle-east-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baldwin supported<\/a> creating an independent Palestinian State.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Greenblatt, a former Trump administration official, wrote for CNN that the Hamas attack on Israel has killed the notion of a two-state solution. \u201cEven if we had come up with a solution that was acceptable to the parties, though, there were still far too many Palestinians who were intent on massacring Jews and destroying the Jewish State of Israel,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/10\/opinions\/israel-gaza-hamas-biden-greenblatt\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he wrote.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Opposed Donald Trump\u2019s Middle East Plan Because It Wasn\u2019t Respectful Enough to Palestinians<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baldwin.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/democrats-reject-trump-middle-east-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baldwin joined in a letter <\/a>trashing Trump\u2019s Middle East plan. The letter criticized the lack of Palestinian involvement and support, saying the Trump plan \u201cviolates the Palestinians\u2019 right to self-determination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter says, \u201cUnilateral U.S. endorsement of Israeli sovereignty throughout Jerusalem, over all Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley guarantees Palestinian rejection and paves the way for full or partial Israeli annexation of the West Bank. Such a development would disregard international law, engender stiff opposition from our allies, and undermine existing U.S. policy regarding the unilateral annexation of Crimea, eastern Ukraine, northern Cyprus and elsewhere. It will also place allies like Jordan in an untenable position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-51288218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to BBC<\/a>, Trump\u2019s plan promised to \u201ckeep Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s undivided capital. He proposed an independent Palestinian state and the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over recent years, Baldwin has taken other actions not perceived as supportive of Israel:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2023\/08\/tammy-baldwin-san-francisco-fundraiser-nadia-rahman-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jewish Insider reported<\/a> that Baldwin recently was photographed at a California fundraiser \u201cwith a San Francisco activist who has accused Israel of \u2018ethnic cleansing,\u2019 \u2018apartheid\u2019 and a \u2018pogrom\u2019 targeting Palestinians.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-113584 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/F2Ky3cLa8AAnoK8-291x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Tammy Baldwin&#039;s Record on Israel\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" title=\"Tammy Baldwin&#039;s Record on Israel\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baldwin.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/ceasefire-in-middle-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She once joined calls <\/a>for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>Baldwin also opposed Israel\u2019s annexation of the West Bank, <a href=\"https:\/\/jstreet.org\/stop-annexation\/senate-annexation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing in a letter<\/a>, \u201cIf you move forward with unilateral annexation, we would not support that action. This is consistent with long-standing American policy opposing unilateral actions by either party to the conflict.
