Wisconsin\u2019s Republican-controlled legislature withheld pay raises for employees of the University of Wisconsin System (UW) over \u00a0its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) funding, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

Wisconsin Republicans\u00a0voted<\/a>\u00a0in June to cut the UW System\u2019s budget by $32 million, which is the estimated amount it spends on DEI over a 2-year period. Wisconsin Republicans\u00a0denied<\/a>\u00a0the raises Tuesday in a bid to pressure the system to cut the spending,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to the AP.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are denying pay increases to half of our state workforce because of one person\u2019s resistance to inclusion on our campuses,\u201d Democratic Senate Minority Leader Melissa Agard said, according to the AP.<\/p>\n

\"\"The employment relations committee approved raises for other state employees, according to the AP.<\/p>\n

Republican state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (pictured above) said Tuesday he might approve pay raises for UW employees if the school system gives up the power to create its own jobs and said that he would continue to negotiate with UW officials, according to the AP.<\/p>\n

UW System President Jay Rothman said the decision to not approve the UW pay raises was \u201cunprecedented,\u201d the AP reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are beyond disappointed,\u201d Rothan said. \u201cIt is unfair and not right to leave families of those faculties and staff behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other states, including\u00a0Florida<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Texas<\/a>, have banned the use of public funds for DEI programs in colleges and universities.<\/p>\n

Robin, Agard, and UW did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n
