{"id":6695,"date":"2023-10-27T21:57:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T21:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=6695"},"modified":"2023-10-27T22:02:05","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T22:02:05","slug":"wisconsin-republicans-push-free-speech-protections-for-uw-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=6695","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Republicans Push Free Speech Protections for UW Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/free-speech-protections-for-uw-schools\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/free-speech-protections-for-uw-schools\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Collage-Maker-07-Mar-2023-09-21-AM-2745.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Free Speech Protections for UW Schools UW-Madison Race-based Hiring University of Wisconsin Affirmative Action uw tuition increase Diversity &amp; Workforce Development\" title=\"Free Speech Protections for UW Schools\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol say students need free speech protections on University of Wisconsin campuses.<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly Committee on Colleges and University held a public hearing on a pair of plans Republicans say will not only make sure the Universities of Wisconsin are respecting the First Amendment but will also open the campus to more students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stark difference between Democrats\u2019 confidence level in higher education, which is about 59% positive according to Gallup, and that of Republicans, which is only about 19% positive and Independents confidence which is measured at about 32% positive, is also reflected in the UW Free Speech Survey results shows the lack of intellectual diversity and tolerance for opposing viewpoints on UW campuses is directly affecting enrollment,\u201d Rep. Amanda Nedweski, R-Pleasant Prairie, told lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>She is shepherding one of the two plans, Assembly Bill 553, through the legislature.<\/p>\n<p>Nedweski helped write the legislation after the UW Free Speech Survey last year and after a series of public hearings at UW campuses.<\/p>\n<p>That survey showed half of UW students don\u2019t speak their minds out of fear of being \u201ccanceled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than half of our students, 57%, reported wanting to express their views about a controversial topic in class but decided not to,\u201d UW President Jay Rothman said on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/wisconsin\/article_39e17030-a2fd-11ed-86b6-7f170e715d9b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of the survey.<\/a> \u201cSome worried that other students would disagree with their views, or that the instructor would find their views offensive, or that they would get a lower grade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nedweski said so far, the University of Wisconsin has resisted requests to protect and promote free speech.<\/p>\n<p>She said lawmakers must now do something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is to put pressure on the universities,\u201d Nedweski said.<\/p>\n<p>Nedweski\u2019s plan would include a requirement that would send prospective students a letter explaining that their UW campuses violated the new free speech policy.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats at the Capitol don\u2019t like that idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we\u2019re putting pressure on the Universities?\u201d Rep.
