Evers: Banning Transgender Surgeries for Children Has Nothing To Do With Protecting Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/banning-transgender-surgeries-for-children\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/banning-transgender-surgeries-for-children\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/tony-evers-rainbow-pride-flag.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"tony evers rainbow pride flag\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Texas Concertina Wire\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin\u2019s governor is criticizing Republican lawmakers for not following science and what he is calling an \u201cantipathy\u201d toward LGBTQ people.<\/p>\n<p>The governor said in an interview with WisEeye he will veto the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/wisconsin-republicans-approve-bills-on-girls-sports-gender-affirming-care-for-children\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republican-backed plan<\/a> to ban sex change operations and hormone therapy for children in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t realize that the legislature had the ability to know more about that issue than the physicians that are with those kids,\u201d Gov. Tony Evers said.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Wisconsin Assembly and the State Senate this month passed legislation that would ban transgender procedures for children.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Right Now published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/transgender-treatments-of-minors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multipart series<\/a> exploring gender treatments in Wisconsin hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans said the idea is to give young people and their families time to \u201chit the pause button.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat this bill does is it grants minors the time for their minds to develop in order to make the right choice for them at the appropriate developmental age,\u201d Rep. Scott Allen, R-Waukesha, said. \u201cI want to make clear that this bill does not prohibit social transitioning and it does not affect adults. It allows minors the chance to hit the pause button before making a significant choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evers said the Republican focus on transgender procedures for children, and another plan that would ban trans athletes from girls sports in the state, has nothing to do with protecting kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s follow the science. The science is not what they\u2019re talking about,\u201d Evers said. \u201cThey\u2019re talking about more of an issue that is not science-based. It really has nothing to do with the medicine, it has to do with their LGBTQ apathy, frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evers has promised to veto both the transgender procedures for minors ban and the ban on biological boys playing girls sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo no, that won\u2019t go anywhere,\u201d Evers said. \u201cI continue to support the LGBTQ kids. They struggled mightily to begin with, and then to have this be the issue that the legislature feels that they have to weigh in on. I think it\u2019s ridiculous.
