{"id":873,"date":"2023-02-28T17:11:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T18:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=873"},"modified":"2023-02-28T19:30:31","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:30:31","slug":"supreme-court-justices-raise-concerns-about-bidens-ability-to-forgive-student-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/?p=873","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court Justices Raise Concerns About Biden\u2019s Ability to Forgive Student Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/forgive-student-debt\/\">https:\/\/www.wisconsinrightnow.com\/forgive-student-debt\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/wifamily.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/biden-red-background-memes-jokes.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"biden red background Falling Food Prices\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments Tuesday in a legal challenge to President Joe Biden\u2019s plan to cancel hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/biden-plan-taxpayers-to-pay-billions-after-administration-forgives-10k-to-20k-in-student-loan\/article_7a4daa34-23c4-11ed-ae26-d3aa728d32c5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>announced<\/strong><\/a> in August of last year that his administration would \u201cforgive\u201d $10,000 in federal student loan debt for those making less than $125,000 per year or $250,000 for married couples. Debtors who borrowed money before July 1 can qualify.<\/p>\n<p>For Pell Grant recipients, the debt reduction would total $20,000. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/58494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>estimated<\/strong><\/a> that the plan would cost taxpayers roughly $400 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration argued that the administration has the legal authority to cancel the debt. Justices poked back at that claim, asking whether Congress\u2019 HEROES ACT, which allowed the federal government to delay debt collection because of national emergencies, really grants power to cancel that debt.<\/p>\n<p>Justices point out that the law does not explicitly allow for the waiving of student debt in this way, but the Biden administration argued that forgiving the student debt was still in line with the purpose of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Justices also raised concerns that using a questionable legal argument to allow such a large release of federal funds may go beyond the power of the legislation. The Biden administration, though, argued that the legal challengers did not have a real injury because of the policy that would give them legal standing to challenge the plan in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has paused student loan repayment until the Supreme Court rules on this case, expected by June and no later than July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, my Administration argues our case for student debt relief in the Supreme Court,\u201d Biden said in a statement. \u201cThis relief is critical to over 40 million Americans as they recover from the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. We\u2019re confident it\u2019s legal.
