Research is clear that legalizing adult recreational marijuana use increases the drug\u2019s use. What are the consequences?<\/p>\n

In this fifth installment in our \u201creal facts\u201d series, Jeremiah Mosteller looks at the available research. Some conclusions:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Legalizing all adult use is likely to increase the uncontrolled and harmful use of cannabis \u2014 that is, \u201ccannabis use disorder\u201d \u2014 in Wisconsin. Researchers are more divided on whether legalizing only the medical use of marijuana has similar effects.<\/p>\n

But adult recreational legalization also is likely to reduce opioid use and overdoses, and there is evidence in other states that legalizing cannabis in other states has reduced alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n

A finding that\u202fWisconsin has, without a deliberate change in policy, drifted into a de facto decriminalization as\u202fprosecution for marijuana offenses<\/a>\u202fhas become rare in much of the state, from Mosteller.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A finding that\u202flegalization in other states has led to either\u202fneutral or positive effects on crime<\/a>, but an increase in traffic crashes, from Mosteller.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A finding from Mosteller that legalization for recreational or medical use\u00a0increases the use of the drug among adults<\/a>, while research on youth use is less conclusive.<\/p>\n

A finding that, in other states, legalizing cannabis for adult use\u00a0reduced unemployment and increased labor force participation<\/a>, and seemed to have no impact on wages but led to a reduction in workers\u2019 compensation claims, again from Mosteller.<\/p>\n
