Experts hired by Wisconsin\u2019s supreme court to redraw the state\u2019s political maps say there won\u2019t be anymore Republican gerrymandering.<\/p>\n

The court\u2019s outside experts rejected maps drawn by Republican lawmakers and the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty. The experts said both maps continued to gerrymander the state for Republicans.<\/p>\n

The experts did say WILL\u2019s maps performed \u201cvery well on traditional good government criteria,\u201d including the best results on \u201cthe splits of political subdivisions.\u201d But the pair claimed WILL\u2019s maps were guilty of \u201cstealth gerrymandering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe report hides its bias behind a fog of faux sophistication. Let\u2019s be clear, our maps have been rejected for one reason and one reason alone, they don\u2019t produce the partisan outcomes the experts or many on the court want,\u201d WILL\u2019s Rick Esenberg said. \u201cSo, they ignore all the traditional tests to distinguish partisan bias from political geography. It is what [U.S. Supreme Court] Chief Justice [Jon] Roberts has called social science gobbledygook: Obfuscation that hides one\u2019s preferences so that it needn\u2019t be justified.\u201d<\/p>\n

The experts also did not recommend any of the maps drawn by Democrats, though their report did offer to draw new maps of their own.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the court were to instruct us to create such a map, we are poised to produce it quickly,\u201d the experts wrote.<\/p>\n

Gov. Tony Evers said the experts\u2019 rejection of the Republican maps mean a critical change in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe days of Wisconsinites living under some of the most gerrymandered maps in the country are numbered,\u201d Evers said.<\/p>\n

The supreme court says Republicans, WILL and the Democratic map makers now have a week to respond to the report.<\/p>\n

Wisconsin will need new legislative maps by March 15 if they are going to be used in this year\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n
