The state Supreme Court earlier this month ruled that ballot drop boxes away from a clerk’s office are legal. In light of that ruling, State Senator Dan Knodl and State Representative Scott Krug have introduced a bill they say incorporates basic principles of ballot security and transparency in record keeping and standardizes the rules for clerks. It’s unclear when the state legislature will take up the bill since the regular session is over and most legislators are out involved in campaigns.

Ballot drop boxes away from a clerk’s office pose a real security issue. The details of this proposal are not yet available, but it’s pretty safe to say that if this bill passes in the legislature, it’s likely the governor will veto it since he has vetoed every election reform bill put on his desk over the last six years.
