Vote YES to Check Evers’ Out-of-Control Spending
On August 13th, VOTE YES on Questions 1 & 2
On August 13, 2024 there will be a statewide ballot initiative to approve two amendments to the Wisconsin Constitution that would give the legislature the ability to approve the expenditure of federal funds.
Currently, unlike the vast majority of states, Governor Tony Evers and his executive branch spend billions of dollars of federal funds without any approval from the state legislature, who wields the constitutional “power of the purse”.
Voting YES on questions 1 & 2 on the August 13th ballot will prevent the executive branch from unilaterally spending federal dollars towards their preferred projects and provide a necessary check on their power from the state legislature. This ballot initiative will help solidify the constitutional separation of powers present in the Wisconsin Constitution.
How has Evers’ unilaterally spent federal funds?
- $14 million on minor league sports teams, summer camps and movie theaters.
- $9.3 million for a professional soccer stadium in Milwaukee
- Several of the appropriations targeted DEI issues and created duplicative programs at various agencies.
How does voting YES impact me?
Holds the line on state spending to prevent further tax increases.
Special interest groups will almost certainly seek to maintain the level of spending even after the federal money runs dry, putting state taxpayers on the hook for the foreseeable future.
Greater accountability for state spending decisions.
By granting spending authority to the legislature, decision-making becomes more accountable and closer to the people, allowing the public to hold politicians responsible for their financial decisions.
Ensures our politicians work together:
Currently, the governor can spend federal funds without input from the legislature, leading to a lack of collaboration. These amendments will promote cooperation and ensure that both branches of government are involved in the process, leading to more balanced and well-considered financial decisions.
The questions will appear on the Tuesday, August 13, 2024, ballot.
