The controversy over a biological male competing in a women’s boxing event highlights the need for the Olympics to return to a sex-testing standard. A Wisconsin Right Now opinion piece notes that the Olympics abandoned sex-testing in nineteen ninety-nine. From ninety-two to ninety-nine, all women were screened via a DNA test at the games. In the current games, according to the International Olympic Committee, at least for boxing, the gender of athletes has been based on their passports.

I remember Wisconsin’s own Olympic champion Bonnie Blair telling us at press conference in support of a Protect Women’s Sports bill a couple of years ago that she had to pass a DNA test at the Olympics to verify she was female. Blair understood in a profound way that a sporting contest is inherently unfair if biological males are allowed to compete with biological females
