During the late nineteenth century, Labor Day became a widely celebrated holiday in the United States to recognize the American labor movement and the contributions of laborers to the social and economic achievements of our nation. The US Department of Labor explains that, quote, “American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.”

Many Americans view Labor Day as an opportunity to gather with family and friends and enjoy a long weekend. Unfortunately many have forgotten the true meaning of the holiday. America would not be the nation we are today without the contributions of hardworking citizens and their commitment to excellence that has propelled our nation to greatness. Today, we remember those laborers!
