Last week, the US House passed its version of the twenty 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, or the NDAA. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was responsible for bipartisan negotiations that led to the passage of the one thousand eight hundred-page bill. Notably absent from the bill was a measure to require women to register for the selective service, which would expose them to the draft. The bill also does not include provisions to expand IVF or fund gender transition procedures for the children of military service members.

Negotiating the NDAA is no easy task, and the wins scored by Johnson and House Republicans deserve to be recognized. Family Research Council notes that if the bill is passed with the current language, it will be the first time that protections for children from gender transition procedures are codified in federal statute. The bill now heads to the Senate for approval.
