Delafield, Wis. – The Institute for Reforming Government (IRG) released another “Court Watch” primer detailing the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s actions on Voter ID and Election integrity on Tuesday. The primer outlines how the current liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court has already reversed two key election law cases, and more could be in the pipeline.
WHY IT MATTERS: The rules for Wisconsin’s elections are written into state law, so they are frequently interpreted and applied by Wisconsin courts. That means Voter ID, absentee balloting, redistricting, and decisions from the Wisconsin Elections Commission often end up in court. The liberal majority has already overturned a key election integrity case that had limited the use of absentee ballot drop boxes.
THE QUOTE:
“Wisconsinites support Voter ID because it provides a safeguard to ensure free and fair elections with transparent and verifiable results,” said Jake Curtis, General Counsel and Director of IRG’s CIO. “The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s recent actions to overturn election law precedent should be concerning to supporters of Voter ID.”
WHAT’S NEXT: State courts impact everyday Wisconsinites’ lives and IRG’s new Court Watch initiative will lead in educating on the importance of the judicial branch.
