Delafield, Wis. – The Institute for Reforming Government (IRG) released another “Court Watch” primer on Thursday detailing how Act 10 helped local school boards transform schools and rewarded high-performing teachers. The primer outlines the devastating effects that overturning Act 10 would have on Wisconsin Public Schools.

WHY IT MATTERS: Act 10 helped schools put more money into the classroom and rewarded the highest-performing teachers. The breathing room and financial flexibility districts now have is directly attributable to Act 10. Savings can now go into classrooms, to special-needs services, or to hire teachers rather than to unsustainably high fringe benefits.

THE QUOTE:

“The Wisconsin Supreme Court could overturn a decade of progress in public education with a single decision overturning Act 10, which would handcuff locally elected school boards from managing their schools,” said Jake Curtis, General Counsel and Director of IRG’s CIO. “Overturning Act 10 would bring Wisconsin students backward in a time when our students are struggling.”

WHAT’S NEXT: State courts impact everyday Wisconsinites’ lives and IRG’s new Court Watch initiative will lead in educating on the importance of the judicial branch.
