The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments yesterday for the case Mahmoud v. Taylor. The suit was brought against a Maryland school board for teaching pro-LGBTQ curriculum without parental consent or the ability to opt-out. The plaintiffs argued that this practice violated the Free Exercise Clause in the First Amendment citing a previous decision, Wisconsin v. Yoder. The Supreme Court’s decision in this case will set an important precedent for the future of parental rights across the country.

In Yoder the Supreme Court determined parents’ religious beliefs, in that case Amish beliefs, trumped compulsory attendance laws. This current case similarly deals with government overreach regarding the fundamental right of parents to guide the religious beliefs and the education of their children. The Supreme Court should heed the precedent and side with liberty.
