The Institute for Family Studies’ recent report found a correlation between the lack of affordable single-family homes and falling marriage and fertility rates in the United States. Most Americans have a desire to buy homes, but current land-use regulations and urban growth boundaries discourage affordable building in this market. The inability to buy a home in turn hinders young people in their plans for marriage and children. The Institute recommends that federal, state, and local governments adopt policies that help and encourage families to buy single-family homes.

Young people are truly the future. We cannot expect our communities to flourish if young families are unable to thrive. Home ownership is an important step for family flourishing. Policymakers should heed the Institute’s advice and work to make the American dream a reality once again. Doing so helps ensure the future well-being of our communities, state, and nation.
