The Arkansas legislature recently passed a bill that requires public school curriculum to include instruction on fetal development. One provision outlined in the bill ensures that students are shown a high-definition ultrasound of a baby in the early stages of growth. This requirement guarantees that students understand how babies develop from the moment of conception to birth. Arkansas has set an excellent example for how other states, including Wisconsin, can strengthen their laws surrounding this issue.

Currently, Wisconsin law requires schools to discuss fetal development only if the school board chooses to provide a human growth and development course, which most public schools do. Requiring students to see a high-definition ultrasound of a developing baby would make it very clear it’s a baby—a human person—not just some amorphous clump of tissue.
