The US Supreme Court ruled last week in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic that states have the right to withhold Medicaid funds from medical providers, including Planned Parenthood, as they see fit. The case came from the Fourth Circuit Court which ruled that South Carolina had violated civil rights laws by refusing to include Planned Parenthood in their list of approved providers. The Supreme Court disagreed. Speaking for the majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch declared that disbursing state and federal funds is in the hands of elected officials.
This ruling is a win for pro-life supporters and the pro-life movement. Now, every state has the legal standing it needs to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion facilities across the country. Typically, these funds are redirected to federally qualified health clinics that serve low-income individuals, but they do not refer for or perform abortions.
