The IRS released a statement in a court filing last week redefining its previous policies on churches and political endorsements. The agency’s legal representatives indicated that endorsing candidates will not result in removing a church’s tax-exempt status. Citing First Amendment conflicts, the IRS recognized that punishing churches for political endorsements forces its agency to walk a thin line to avoid violating freedom of speech.

The agency’s reconsideration is a step in the right direction for religious freedom. The government’s role should never be to dictate how churches operate. Local churches should be able to decide for themselves, as God convicts and leads them, on how they will operate, including how or if they will speak on any given issue.
