The US Department of Justice subpoenaed 20 doctors last week who are suspected of violating President Trump’s Executive Order criminalizing transgender drugs and surgeries for minors. Countless studies have shown that affirming children in their gender confusion does not alleviate their emotional and psychological distress. Twenty-six states currently have Help Not Harm laws in place—laws prohibiting medical professionals from prescribing these drugs or performing these surgeries on minors.
Although executive orders are binding, they’re vulnerable to change as soon as the next Administration takes office. To combat this vulnerability, every state should pass legislation protecting children. In Wisconsin, the Assembly passed a Help Not Harm law earlier this year. It is currently awaiting action in the Senate.
