In another First Amendment victory, Christian wedding photographer Emilee Carpenter won her lawsuit last week against the state of New York. Carpenter sued New York over a state law that required her to photograph same-sex weddings which she argued violated her religious convictions and freedom of expression. She originally lost, but after the US Supreme Court, in a similar case, affirmed the free speech of a web designer, the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reviewed her case and sent it back to the lower court where she prevailed.
The First Amendment protects the right of every American to express their religious convictions, even if those convictions do not line up with the popular ideology of the day. No one should have to fear losing their livelihood because they exercised their religious or free speech freedom. The US Supreme Court decision involved with this lawsuit has huge national implications.
