A California start-up, Bootstrap Bio, is currently raising funds for a new embryo gene-editing technology. This technology will allow scientists to edit the DNA of unborn children if genetic mutations or undesirable physical characteristics are detected. Research conducted over the last ten years, however, has shown that DNA editing is unpredictable and often causes worse genetic damage than the original mutations. While current U.S. law prohibits embryonic gene-editing, pro-life advocates have expressed concern over the practice’s growing popularity.

Science and technology are once again getting ahead of ethics. Science does not have to do something simply because it can. Embryonic gene-editing is a eugenics-based practice that ultimately devalues human life. From the moment of conception, every baby, even those with special challenges, is a human being created in God’s image with inherent value.
