The Wisconsin Department of Health Services recently proposed an amendment to a state rule that will change the terms “mother” to “member” and “father” to “other parent.” Opposing voices argue that changing these terms will devalue the importance of mothers and fathers within state rules. Pro-family organizations, including Wisconsin Family Action, are working to stop the amendment from taking effect since the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision in Evers v. Marklein stripped the legislature of its authority to act as a check on state agencies.

“Mother” and “father” are terms that encompass so much more than the ability to procreate. God designed mothers and fathers to fulfill unique roles within the family unit. The DHS must be stopped from pandering to a political subset. Such pandering in this instance will set a precedent that disregards the importance of the family in state laws and administrative rules and regulations.
